Chapter 1 - The Video He Couldn't Let Them See

“Turn that damn video off!”
Jason Morgan exploded across the evidence table before anyone understood what was happening.
The laptop slid across the polished wood.
Printed photographs scattered over the ballroom floor.
Two police officers lunged at the same time.
One wrapped both arms around Jason's chest.
The other locked his shoulder before he could reach the woman kneeling only a few feet away.
Guests gasped and pushed their chairs backward.
Major Claire Morgan reacted instantly.
Still wearing her decorated Army dress uniform, she twisted her entire body around her four-year-old daughter.
Emma disappeared against Claire's chest.
Claire's medals struck softly against the little girl's shoulder as she wrapped both arms around her.
Emma was shaking so violently she could barely breathe.
Jason fought against the officers.
“She's lying!”
Claire never looked at him.
She only stroked Emma's hair.
The ballroom projector continued playing silent porch security footage.
An elderly woman stepped forward with trembling hands.
Mrs. Porter carefully placed a small black security drive beside the laptop.
Claire looked at it.
Then at Jason.
Emma suddenly whispered through broken sobs.
“Daddy made me practice crying.”
The room fell completely silent.
Even Jason stopped struggling for one heartbeat.
Claire slowly lifted her eyes.
The grief inside them disappeared.
