Emma looked up with tear-filled eyes.
"Mommy..."
Claire brushed the child's hair away.

"If I get scared again..."
Claire answered before Emma finished.
"I'll still come."

Claire wrapped both arms around her.
"No matter what."
Emma finally smiled.
It was small.
Shaky.
But real.
The first genuine smile Claire had seen since returning home.
The Christmas tree lights reflected across Claire's medals.
