Chapter 7 - The Recording He Forgot
Jason often filmed family moments.
He believed they made him look like the perfect father.
One evening he accidentally left his phone recording after setting it on the kitchen counter.
The camera captured everything.
Jason looked directly at Emma.
"Remember..."
"If Mommy asks..."
Emma quietly answered.
"I say she yells."
"And if she hugs you?"
"I cry."
"And then everyone believes you."
Jason smiled proudly.
"Perfect."
The recording ended.
Nobody inside the ballroom spoke.
Tessa covered her mouth.
Mrs. Porter lowered her head.
Several guests quietly wiped away tears.
Claire slowly stood while keeping Emma safely against her body.
She held the black security drive between two fingers.
Jason stared at it as though it were a weapon.
Claire's voice remained calm.
"You trained my child to fear me."
Jason opened his mouth.
