Chapter 8 - The Last File

The technician hesitated.

"There... there's one more."

Claire nodded.

"Play it."

The screen changed.

Christmas Eve.

Only hours before the ceremony.

Jason and Tessa stood beside the decorated tree.

Emma slept on the couch.

Jason smiled.

"Tomorrow everyone will finally believe Claire's unstable."

Tessa laughed nervously.

"And after custody?"

Jason looked toward Emma.

"We start over somewhere else."

Tessa glanced toward the sleeping child.

"What if she tells someone?"

Jason shrugged.

"She's four."

Claire felt Emma bury her face deeper into her shoulder.

The little girl whispered one sentence.

"I didn't know lying was bad."

Claire kissed the top of her daughter's head.

"You know now."

Emma nodded.

The ballroom remained silent.
