Chapter 4 - The Woman Beside Jason
Claire remembered Tessa immediately.
Jason introduced her as "a family friend."
She visited constantly while Claire was overseas.
She brought gifts.
Cooked dinner.
Decorated the Christmas tree.
Emma called her "Miss Tessa."
Claire tried to ignore the discomfort.
Jason insisted she was helping.
One evening Claire returned home early from a veterans' event.
She heard voices upstairs.
Emma was crying again.
Claire quietly climbed halfway.
The bedroom door was partly open.
Tessa knelt beside Emma.
"You remember what to say?"
Emma nodded through tears.
"What happens when Mommy tries to hug you?"
"I cry."
"And then?"
"I say she scares me."
"Good girl."
Claire's entire body went numb.
Before she could step forward, Jason appeared behind Tessa.
He noticed movement in the hallway.
Claire had already backed away.
She wasn't certain what she'd heard.
Not yet.
She needed proof.
Mrs. Porter quietly placed the black drive into Claire's hands later that night.
"I think this answers everything."
Claire spent the next forty minutes watching every recording.
Each clip hurt more than the last.
Emma wasn't naturally afraid.
