Chapter 2 - The Christmas She Almost Missed

Claire had spent eleven months overseas.
Her final deployment ended only three weeks before Christmas.
Every letter she sent home asked the same question.
"How's Emma?"
Jason always answered quickly.
"She's great."
"She misses you."
"She cries every night."
Claire believed him.
Video calls became shorter.
Emma rarely smiled.
Sometimes she hid behind Jason.
Other times she stared at the floor and refused to speak.
Jason always had an explanation.
"She's overwhelmed."
"She's tired."
"The therapist says not to pressure her."
Claire blamed herself.
Maybe eleven months had been too long.
Maybe Emma no longer recognized her own mother.
When Claire finally came home, Emma refused to hug her.
Instead, the little girl burst into tears and ran upstairs.
Claire stood frozen in the hallway.
Jason sighed dramatically.
"I told you this would happen."
For the next two weeks, every attempt ended the same way.
Whenever Claire entered a room...
Emma cried.
Whenever Claire tried to read her a bedtime story...
Emma screamed for Jason.
Whenever Claire reached out to hold her daughter's hand...
Emma pulled away as though Claire frightened her.
Each rejection broke something inside Claire.
She had survived combat.
She had survived losing soldiers.
Nothing prepared her for losing her daughter's trust.
Then Mrs. Porter, the elderly neighbor who often watched the house, quietly asked Claire one question.
"Have you ever seen the porch cameras?"
Claire frowned.
"What porch cameras?"
Mrs. Porter looked toward Jason's truck parked outside.
May you like
"I don't think he wanted you to."
👉 The tiny security drive in Mrs. Porter's purse held something Jason believed no one would ever discover.
