Chapter 11 - Gwen’s Last Performance
At Gwen’s bond hearing, the courtroom was crowded.
She entered wearing a plain navy dress, no jewelry, and a carefully wounded expression.
Her attorney described her as a devoted sister caught inside a troubled marriage.
Then Gwen took the stand.
“Nora manipulated Liam from the beginning,” she said tearfully. “She isolated him. She secretly moved money. That night, I was only trying to protect my brother.”
Nora sat beside Mara and her attorney.
She did not react.
Gwen continued.
“Nora placed her own ring on the balcony. She wrote the note. She wanted Liam to panic.”
The prosecutor played the elevator footage.
Gwen claimed she had carried the ring because Nora handed it to her.
The prosecutor played Mrs. Alvarez’s recording.
Gwen said the audio lacked context.
Then her attorney produced text messages that appeared to show Nora discussing how to “take control of the trust.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
Liam’s face tightened.
For one second, Gwen looked at him with the same expression she had used since childhood—the silent command to defend her.
This time, he stood.
His attorney grabbed his sleeve.
Liam pulled free.
“Those messages are fake.”
The judge ordered him to sit.
The prosecutor asked how he knew.
“Because Nora changed her phone number six months before those messages were supposedly sent. Gwen helped me move her contacts to the new phone.”
Gwen’s expression cracked.
Liam handed the prosecutor an old backup device.
“I found this in Gwen’s storage unit. It contains the app she used to create fake conversations.”
The judge called a recess.
As deputies approached Gwen, she finally lost control.
“You ungrateful coward!” she screamed at Liam. “I built your life!”
Liam looked at her without flinching.
