Chapter 9 - The Theft Behind the Transfers
Nora was taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
Liam was not allowed in her room.
She had asked the nurses to keep him away.
He did not argue.
He sat in the waiting area holding her wedding ring while detectives reviewed the blue drive with Mara Whitcomb.
The files were extensive.
Bank statements.
Forged signatures.
Altered trust reports.
Audio recordings.
Copies of checks written to shell companies controlled by Gwen.
Over four years, she had stolen more than $186,000 from Liam’s inheritance.
She had also opened a credit line using his personal information.
The debt exceeded $70,000.
But the most damaging recording had been made two weeks earlier.
Nora’s voice could be heard confronting Gwen in the apartment kitchen.
“You’re going to return the money.”
Gwen laughed.
“Liam trusts me. He barely trusts himself.”
“I have copies.”
“Then I’ll make him believe you stole it.”
That was why Nora had stayed silent.
Mara had advised her not to confront Liam until the emergency court filing was approved. If Gwen learned they had enough evidence, she could move the remaining assets overseas.
The eight thousand dollars covered Mara’s retainer, a forensic review, and the bond required to freeze the trust.
Nora had protected nearly half a million dollars.
Liam had repaid her by locking her outside.
A detective sat beside him.
“Your sister will be charged with fraud, identity theft, evidence tampering, unlawful imprisonment, and reckless endangerment.”
Liam looked at the ring in his palm.
“What about me?”
The detective did not soften his answer.
“You deliberately locked your inadequately dressed wife outside in dangerous weather. That will also be investigated.”
Liam nodded.
“It should be.”
Then Nora’s doctor entered the waiting room.
