Chapter 18 - Learning to Listen

Nora and Liam met once a month.
Then twice.
They did not discuss reconciliation at first.
They talked about therapy.
Family patterns.
Fear.
The difference between remorse and change.
Liam learned to sit with uncomfortable silence without rushing to fill it.
Nora learned that setting boundaries did not make her cruel.
When winter returned, she suffered her first panic attack during a sudden snowstorm.
She was driving home when the temperature dropped and snow struck the windshield.
Her hands locked around the steering wheel.
She pulled into a parking lot and called Mrs. Alvarez.
By accident, she tapped Liam’s name instead.
He answered immediately.
“Nora?”
“I can’t breathe.”
“Are you parked safely?”
“Yes.”
“I’m staying on the phone. I won’t come unless you ask.”
He did not tell her to calm down.
He did not make promises.
He guided her attention toward the heater, the solid seat beneath her, and the sound of her own breathing.
When the panic eased, Nora began to cry.
“I hate that night still controls me.”
“It doesn’t control you,” Liam said. “It hurt you. That’s different.”
She closed her eyes.
“Can you come get me?”
“I’m on my way.”
He arrived with dry socks, a heavy coat, and hot tea.
He stopped several feet from the car and waited until Nora unlocked the door herself.
That small act mattered.
Months later, Nora invited him to dinner at the apartment that had once belonged to them.
She had replaced the sliding door lock.
The balcony had been enclosed with heated glass panels.
Liam stood inside and looked toward the place where she had begged him to listen.
“I don’t deserve to feel comfortable here.”

“This home isn’t about what you deserve,” Nora said. “It’s about what I survived.”
👉 That night, Nora finally told Liam whether she believed their marriage could be rebuilt.
