Chapter 16 - The Apology Without a Request
Gwen received a lengthy prison sentence for fraud, identity theft, forgery, unlawful imprisonment, evidence tampering, and reckless endangerment.
The judge ordered restitution from every recoverable asset.
The stolen jewelry was sold.
The shell accounts were seized.
The remaining trust funds were transferred to an independent institution, exactly as Evelyn’s real will required.
Liam faced separate consequences.
He pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment rather than forcing Nora to testify again.
The court imposed probation, community service, mandatory counseling, and a no-contact order that Nora could modify only if she chose.
He accepted every condition.
Months passed before Nora agreed to see him.
They met in Mara’s conference room.
Liam looked thinner. Quieter.
He placed Nora’s wedding ring on the table between them.
“I’m not asking you to take this back.”
Nora stared at it.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me,” he continued. “I just need to say this without making you responsible for what happens afterward.”
She waited.
“I chose suspicion because it was easier than listening. I used anger to avoid feeling afraid. Gwen knew that, but she didn’t create it. I did.”
Nora’s eyes filled.
Liam did not reach for her.
“I loved you,” she said.
“I know.”
“I was freezing, and you watched me.”
His face crumpled.
“I know.”
“You closed the curtain.”
“I know.”
For the first time, Liam did not defend himself, explain himself, or ask her to comfort him.
He simply let the truth remain in the room.
Nora stood.
“I don’t know whether I can ever trust you again.”
“You don’t owe me the chance.”
She left the ring on the table.
But as she reached the door, she looked back.
“Keep doing the work even if I never come back.”
