Chapter 8 - The Locked Storage Room

Nora’s message named the basement records room.

Officers rushed downstairs with Liam, the building manager, and Dean.

Gwen was ordered to remain upstairs with another officer.

The basement corridor was narrow and cold. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.

At the end stood a steel door marked MANAGEMENT STORAGE.

It was locked from the outside.

Dean stared at it.

“That door never locks automatically.”

Liam began pounding.

“Nora!”

At first, there was no response.

Then came a faint scrape from inside.

The manager unlocked the door.

Nora sat on the floor between stacks of folding chairs and maintenance supplies. Dean’s blanket was still around her shoulders. Her bare feet were red and swollen from the cold.

She raised one hand to shield her eyes from the light.

Liam stopped in the doorway.

The relief on his face collided with unbearable shame.

“Nora.”

She flinched when he said her name.

That reaction broke him more completely than any accusation could have.

A paramedic moved past Liam and knelt beside her.

Nora’s temperature was dangerously low, but she was conscious.

One officer asked how she had become locked inside.

Nora looked toward the hallway.

“Gwen followed me into the stairwell.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“She said Liam would believe I had jumped if she left my ring near the railing.”

Liam gripped the doorframe.

Nora continued.

“I ran into this room when I heard someone downstairs. Gwen shut the door before I could call out.”

The officer radioed upstairs.

“Detain Gwen Porter.”

Nora closed her eyes.

Liam took one step toward her.

She pulled the blanket tighter.

“Don’t.”

He stopped immediately.

👉 Nora was alive—but the evidence on the blue drive was about to destroy far more than Gwen’s lies.
