Chapter 13 - The Brother Who Finally Spoke
Gwen watched Liam walk toward the witness stand.
For a moment, she looked almost relaxed.
She knew every weakness he carried.
She knew how to make him doubt his memory.
How to turn guilt into obedience.
How to make cruelty feel like loyalty.
The prosecutor asked Liam what happened on the night of November 18.
He described seeing the transfers.
Hearing Gwen’s accusation.
Pulling Nora away from the bedroom before she had finished dressing.
Locking the balcony door.
Ignoring Nora’s pleas.
His voice broke, but he continued.
“My sister manipulated me,” he said. “But I made the decision. Nora was outside because I put her there.”
Gwen’s smile faded.
Her attorney stood.
“Mr. Porter, are you blaming your sister to save yourself from prosecution?”
“No.”
“Then why testify?”
“Because Nora spent months protecting me while I spent one night destroying her.”
The courtroom became silent.
The attorney approached.
“Did Gwen force your hand onto the lock?”
“No.”
“Did she force you to close the curtain?”
“No.”
“Did she force you to abandon your wife?”
Liam swallowed.
“No.”
Gwen stared at him with hatred.
He had refused the easiest defense.
He had refused to make her responsible for every part of his failure.
That honesty made the rest of his testimony devastating.
He described Gwen’s long pattern of controlling his finances, humiliating Nora, and manufacturing emergencies whenever Liam began questioning her.
The prosecutor then played Gwen’s recorded threat:
“I’ll make him believe you stole it.”
Gwen slammed both palms against the defense table.
“He was supposed to choose me!”
