Chapter 15 - What Happened in the Stairwell
There was no camera inside the emergency stairwell.
Gwen had relied on that.
But she had forgotten about Nora’s phone.
When Dean found Nora near the management office, he let her use a charging cable. The phone restarted while Gwen was taking her upstairs.
Nora had activated an audio-recording shortcut before entering the apartment.
The recording captured the missing minutes.
Gwen’s voice was sharp and breathless.
“Give me the drive.”
“No.”
“Liam already thinks you’re a thief.”
“He’ll learn the truth.”
“He’ll learn whatever I tell him.”
A struggle followed.
Nora cried out as Gwen twisted her arm.
Then came the stairwell door opening.
Gwen spoke again.
“You’re going to disappear tonight. By morning, everyone will believe you couldn’t live with what you did.”
The jurors stared at her.
On the recording, Nora ran down the stairs.
Gwen’s heels struck the concrete behind her.
A door opened.
Nora called for help.
Then metal slammed.
The recording continued from inside the storage room.
Gwen’s voice came faintly through the door.
“No one is coming for you.”
The courtroom remained completely silent after the audio ended.
Gwen’s attorney asked for a recess.
The judge refused.
The prosecution rested.
Gwen insisted on testifying against her attorney’s advice.
She claimed the recording had been edited.
Mara presented the forensic authentication.
Gwen claimed Nora had provoked her.
Mrs. Alvarez’s recording contradicted her.
Finally, Gwen turned toward Liam.
“Tell them what she did to us!”
Liam did not respond.
Gwen screamed until the judge ordered deputies to remove her.
