Chapter 1 - The Signature She Never Gave

“The surgery saved your life.”

Jared’s voice was soft, polished, almost tender.

But his smile did not reach his eyes.

Shelby lay upright in the private hospital bed, one hand pressed protectively over the thick surgical dressing on her lower abdomen. Pain burned through her body every time she breathed.

She did not remember agreeing to surgery.

She did not remember signing anything.

The last thing she remembered was arriving at the hospital with severe cramps after dinner and hearing a nurse say her vital signs were stable.

Now Jared stood beside her in a tailored black suit, holding a blue medical-record folder against his chest like a shield.

Behind him stood Courtney.

Jared’s twenty-eight-year-old executive assistant.

The woman he had repeatedly called “practically family.”

Courtney wore a fitted light-blue maternity dress. One hand rested possessively over her pregnant belly.

Shelby stared at it.

Then at Jared.

Then at Dr. Mercer, who stood rigidly near the open door, unable to meet her eyes.

Shelby’s crying stopped.

“Who authorized it?” she whispered.

Jared stepped closer and placed the blue folder on the bed.

“I made the decision for us.”

For us.

The words entered the room like poison.

Shelby looked down.

A corner of a sealed authorization form protruded from beneath the folder. At the bottom, she could see part of a signature.

Her name.

But the handwriting was wrong.

Courtney moved closer to Jared and rubbed her belly slowly.

“Jared’s child needs a future,” she said.

The patient monitor continued beeping.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Shelby’s fingers slid beneath the pale-blue blanket and closed around the black smartphone she had hidden there before Jared entered.

The screen was still recording.

Dr. Mercer noticed the movement.

His face drained of color.

Jared followed the doctor’s frightened gaze.

He reached toward the blanket.

Shelby pulled the phone behind her hip and raised one trembling hand between them.

“Don’t touch my evidence.”

Jared froze.

For the first time since she opened her eyes, his confidence cracked.

Shelby ripped the authorization page free from beneath the folder and held it beside the phone.

Courtney’s hand stopped moving over her belly.

Dr. Mercer gripped the doorframe.

And Shelby saw something on the form that made the pain in her abdomen feel suddenly insignificant.
