Chapter 12 - Her Father’s Last Warning

Shelby unfolded the investigator’s report.

The first pages documented Jared’s hidden debts.

Failed investments.

Private loans.

Payments to Rebecca Lane, Courtney’s cousin and the notary on the forged power of attorney.

Then Shelby reached the section marked CONFIDENTIAL.

Her father had discovered that Jared began researching the family trust before proposing marriage.

He had contacted former employees.

He had requested copies of old estate filings.

He had even paid someone to access Daniel’s fertility-storage account.

Shelby’s hands began shaking.

Her father had known Jared was dangerous.

Why had he never told her?

Naomi seemed to read the question on her face.

“Your father planned to confront him.”

“What happened?”

“He died before he could.”

Shelby remembered that night.

Her father had collapsed in his study after drinking his usual evening tea.

The death had been ruled a heart attack.

He had a history of cardiac problems.

No autopsy was performed because Jared convinced Shelby it would be cruel and unnecessary.

Jared had arranged the funeral.

Handled the medications.

Cleared the study before Shelby could enter.

The investigator’s final note stated that Shelby’s father had scheduled a meeting with federal financial investigators for the morning after his death.

Erin whispered, “You don’t think Jared…”

Naomi did not answer.

She removed a small evidence bag.

Inside was an old brass key.

“Your father mailed this to my office the day he died.”

The key opened a private safe-deposit box in downtown Chicago.

Naomi had been legally forbidden to access it unless one of three conditions occurred.

Shelby filed for divorce.

Jared attempted to seize trust assets.

Or Shelby suffered a suspicious medical emergency.

All three conditions had now been met.

The hospital administrator entered with legal counsel.

She confirmed that the electronic records had been secured.

Someone had attempted to delete Shelby’s chart minutes earlier from a hospital executive account.

The attempt failed because Melissa had already placed a preservation lock on the system.

Jared was still trying to erase evidence.

Even from inside the conference room.

Naomi stood.

“We need to access the safe-deposit box tonight.”

Shelby looked at her surgical dressing.

“I’m going.”

“You just had major surgery.”

“This started with my father.”

Erin squeezed her hand.

“You don’t have to prove your strength by hurting yourself.”

Shelby closed her eyes.

Erin was right.

For years, Shelby had believed strength meant tolerating pain quietly.

Now strength meant choosing allies.

“Go for me,” she told Naomi. “Bring back everything.”

Naomi and Erin left together.

Melissa remained with Shelby.

Dr. Mercer sat near the doorway, guarded by hospital counsel.

Courtney stood alone beside the window.

She looked smaller now.

“I didn’t know about your brother,” she said.

Shelby stared at her.

“But you knew about the surgery.”

Courtney lowered her eyes.

“I knew Jared wanted you unable to have children.”

“Why?”

“Because he said you would use a baby to keep him trapped.”

Shelby let out a hollow breath.

“And you believed him.”

“I wanted to.”

That was the most honest thing Courtney had said.

Two hours later, Naomi returned carrying a steel document box.

Inside was Shelby’s father’s handwritten letter.

And a recording labeled:
