Chapter 5 - The Power He Stole

Erin rushed into the room before Jared could stop her.

She was thirty, sharp-eyed, and still wearing the navy coat she had driven from Milwaukee in.

When she saw Shelby’s surgical dressing, her face crumpled.

“Oh my God.”

Shelby reached for her.

Erin crossed the room and took her hand.

Jared immediately stepped between them.

“She needs rest.”

Erin looked at him.

“What did you do?”

“I authorized emergency surgery.”

“You authorized what?”

Courtney stood behind Jared with her hand on her stomach.

Erin noticed her.

Then noticed the pregnancy.

Understanding spread across her face.

“You brought your mistress here?”

Courtney lifted her chin.

“I’m carrying Jared’s child.”

Erin lunged forward verbally, not physically.

“You should be ashamed to breathe the same air as her.”

Jared pulled a folded document from the blue folder.

“This conversation is over.”

He handed it to Dr. Mercer.

The doctor stared at the page.

Shelby recognized the heading.

Durable Medical Power of Attorney.

Jared pointed toward the signature.

“Shelby granted me full authority over medical decisions if she became mentally or physically incapable.”

“I never signed that,” Shelby said.

Jared continued as if she had not spoken.

“The hospital determined she lacked capacity.”

Melissa stepped forward.

“The original intake assessment says the opposite.”

“That assessment was superseded.”

“After she was sedated,” Melissa replied.

Erin took the power-of-attorney document and examined it.

The signature looked more convincing than the one on the surgical form.

Almost perfect.

Then Erin turned the page over.

A notary seal appeared at the bottom.

The notary’s name was familiar.

Rebecca Lane.

Courtney’s cousin.

Shelby remembered meeting her once at Jared’s company Christmas party.

Jared had introduced Rebecca as an administrative consultant.

Now the connection became clear.

The power of attorney had not been prepared during an emergency.

It had been created in advance.

Jared had planned this.

Shelby’s fear transformed into something heavier than anger.

Grief.

She had shared a home with this man for seven years.

She had trusted him with passwords, finances, medical history, and the private pain of losing her father.

He had studied her trust and turned it into a weapon.

Erin reached for her phone.

“I’m calling Naomi.”

Jared snatched the device from her hand.

The action was quick and forceful.

Erin stared at him in disbelief.

“Give it back.”

“You are interfering with a medical situation.”

Melissa moved toward the hallway.

“I’ll call from the nurses’ station.”

Dr. Mercer suddenly blocked her.

His face twisted with shame.

“I can’t let you do that.”

Shelby looked at him.

“What does Jared have on you?”

The doctor’s expression collapsed.

Jared turned sharply.

“Don’t answer.”

That was the moment Shelby knew the doctor was not loyal.

He was trapped.

And trapped people sometimes became witnesses.

She raised her phone.

The audio timeline continued moving.

“You should answer him carefully, Doctor,” Shelby said. “Because every word in this room is being preserved.”

👉 Shelby had exposed Jared’s forged authority—but the reason Dr. Mercer obeyed him was tied to a death that had been hidden for years.
