Chapter 10 - The Flight Waiting at Midnight

The transfer order listed a medical transport company Shelby had never heard of.

Destination: Nassau, Bahamas.

Reason: specialized neurological rehabilitation.

Shelby had no neurological condition.

Erin looked at Jared with disgust.

“You were going to put her on a plane?”

Jared’s expression remained cold.

“She needed privacy.”

“She needed to disappear,” Melissa said.

The hospital administrator took the document.

“This transfer was approved through an executive override.”

Everyone looked at Dr. Mercer.

He shook his head.

“Not mine.”

The authorization code belonged to the hospital’s chief financial officer.

A man Jared’s consulting company had represented for years.

The conspiracy extended beyond one doctor.

Jared saw the realization spreading through the room.

He adjusted his cuffs.

“You’re all reacting to incomplete information.”

Shelby almost laughed.

Her body had been cut open.

Her medical records had been falsified.

Her brother’s stored genetic material had been stolen.

A private aircraft had been arranged to remove her from the country.

And Jared still believed confidence could save him.

The hospital administrator ordered security to remain in the room.

Then she turned to Shelby.

“Mrs. Hale, I need your permission to secure your complete electronic chart and restrict all further access.”

“You have it.”

Jared stepped forward.

“As her medical power of attorney—”

Shelby held up the forged document.

“This is fraudulent.”

“That has not been established.”

Erin pulled out her recovered phone.

“It will be.”

She called Naomi Brooks, the attorney who had represented Shelby’s family for more than twenty years.

Naomi answered on the second ring.

Erin spoke quickly.

The color drained from Jared’s face when he heard the name.

Shelby noticed.

Jared was not frightened by hospital security.

He was frightened by Naomi.

That meant Naomi knew something.

Twenty minutes later, Naomi entered the room carrying a black leather case.

She was fifty-eight, silver-haired, and calm in the way only powerful people could afford to be.

She kissed Shelby’s forehead gently.

Then she turned toward Jared.

“You should have read the amendment.”

Jared’s mouth tightened.

“What amendment?”

Naomi opened her case.

“The one Shelby’s father added to the trust six weeks before he died.”

Shelby stared at her.

She had never heard of an amendment.

Naomi placed a sealed document on the bed.

“Your father suspected someone might try to exploit the biological-heir clause.”

Jared’s confidence flickered.

Naomi continued.

“So he created a protective trigger.”

“What trigger?” Jared asked.

“If any spouse attempts to medically incapacitate, institutionalize, or unlawfully control a Hale beneficiary, that spouse permanently loses every claim to the estate.”

Shelby looked at Jared.

His face had gone completely white.

But Naomi was not finished.
