Chapter 13 - The Voice From the Study

Naomi placed the recording device on the bedside table.

Shelby hesitated before pressing play.

Her father’s voice filled the room.

Calm.

Tired.

Familiar enough to break her heart.

“Shelby, if you are hearing this, I failed to protect you in person.”

Tears slid silently down her face.

“I believe Jared married you to gain access to the trust. I also believe he has been stealing from the company through shell contractors.”

The recording continued.

Her father described invoices, altered signatures, and payments connected to Jared’s private accounts.

Then another voice entered.

Jared’s.

The audio quality changed, as though the device had been recording from inside a drawer.

“You should have stayed out of my marriage,” Jared said.

Her father answered, “It stopped being a marriage when you began treating my daughter like an asset.”

“You can’t remove me without hurting her.”

“I can tell her the truth.”

“She won’t believe you.”

“She will when she sees the records.”

There was a pause.

Then Jared spoke again.

“You have a weak heart, Richard. Stress can be dangerous.”

Shelby stopped breathing.

The recording ended minutes later with a door closing.

Her father died that evening.

The recording did not prove murder by itself.

But it proved threat, motive, and financial fraud.

Combined with missing medication records and Jared’s decision to prevent an autopsy, it was enough to reopen the death investigation.

Hospital counsel contacted law enforcement.

This time, Shelby did not object.

Jared had crossed too many lines for private revenge.

He had harmed patients.

Blackmailed a doctor.

Forged legal documents.

Stolen genetic material.

And destroyed Shelby’s chance to carry a child.

The consequences needed to be public and permanent.

In the conference room, Jared demanded to speak with Shelby.

She refused.

He demanded to speak with Courtney.

Courtney refused too.

Then he asked for Dr. Mercer.

The doctor looked toward Shelby.

“What should I do?”

“It’s your decision.”

Mercer’s eyes filled with shame.

“I spent four years letting fear make my decisions.”

He stood.

“Not anymore.”

He agreed to provide a full statement.

He revealed the payments Jared made to the hospital’s chief financial officer and the private clinic involved in Courtney’s fertility treatment.

Courtney surrendered her phone.

Her messages contained promises from Jared.

Promises of marriage.

Promises of wealth.

And one sentence that froze the entire legal team:

ONCE SHE’S OUT OF THE COUNTRY, THERE WILL BE NO ONE LEFT TO CHALLENGE THE CHILD’S CLAIM.

Courtney began crying.

“What will happen to my baby?”

Shelby looked at her for a long moment.

The baby was biologically Daniel’s child.

Her brother’s child.

But Courtney was still the mother.

And Shelby would not repeat Jared’s mistake by treating a child like property.

“No one will take your baby from you,” Shelby said. “But the truth about how that child was conceived will be protected.”

Courtney covered her face.

For the first time, her tears were not theatrical.

They were real.

Then security entered with news from the conference room.

Jared had disappeared.
