Chapter 3 - The Door He Tried to Close

Jared walked to the hospital-room door and quietly pushed it shut.
Dr. Mercer remained inside.
Courtney moved beside the window.
Shelby watched all three of them.
One controlled husband.
One frightened doctor.
One pregnant mistress who looked far too comfortable in another woman’s hospital room.
Jared turned the lock.
The small click sounded louder than the monitor.
“Unlock it,” Shelby said.
“You’re upsetting yourself.”
“Unlock the door.”
Jared returned to the bed and lowered his voice.
“There are details you don’t understand.”
“Then explain them.”
He looked at the recording phone.
“I’ll explain when you stop trying to turn this into something ugly.”
Courtney gave a small laugh.
Shelby looked at her.
“Is this funny?”
Courtney’s expression sharpened.
“What’s funny is how you still think this marriage was about love.”
Jared spun toward her.
“Courtney.”
But the damage was done.
Shelby absorbed the sentence without reacting.
Courtney’s cruelty came from confidence.
She believed Shelby was already defeated.
That meant there was more.
Dr. Mercer moved toward the door.
Jared blocked him.
“You’re staying.”
The doctor’s shoulders stiffened.
“I need to check another patient.”
“No, you need to clarify the medical necessity of my wife’s procedure.”
Shelby heard the warning underneath the words.
Jared was not asking the doctor to explain.
He was reminding him what to say.
Dr. Mercer stared at the floor.
“There was concern about internal bleeding.”
“Concern?” Shelby asked. “Or evidence?”
The doctor remained silent.
Shelby turned toward the monitor stand.
A small plastic bag containing her personal belongings hung from a hook.
Her hospital wristband.
Her earrings.
Her wallet.
And the leather card holder where she kept the emergency number for her family attorney, Naomi Brooks.
Shelby shifted carefully.
Pain tore across her abdomen.
She gasped.
Jared instinctively reached for her, but she recoiled so sharply that his hand stopped in the air.
“Don’t pretend to care now.”
His expression became flat.
The performance was over.
“You are not in a condition to make decisions.”
Shelby looked directly at him.
“Is that what you told the hospital?”
Jared did not answer.
She looked back at the authorization form.
Near the bottom was a checked box stating that the patient lacked decision-making capacity.
Shelby had walked into the hospital speaking clearly.
She had called her assistant from the waiting room.
She had answered questions from a nurse.
Someone had changed her chart after she arrived.
The monitor beeped faster.
Dr. Mercer noticed.
“Her heart rate is rising.”
Jared’s voice remained calm.
“Then give her something.”
Shelby stared at him.
Something to make her sleep again.
Something to erase more time.
She grabbed the nurse-call button and pressed it.
Nothing happened.
She pressed it again.
Still nothing.
Courtney’s gaze dropped to the disconnected cord hanging behind the bed.
Shelby followed her eyes.

The call button had been unplugged.
👉 Jared had isolated Shelby inside the room—but he had forgotten that someone outside had already begun watching the door.
