Chapter 14 - His Last Attempt at Control

The hospital entered lockdown.

Security sealed the elevators and stairwells.

Shelby remained in bed, too weak to move safely.

Melissa locked the room.

Dr. Mercer stood near the door.

Courtney sat in the corner with both hands over her belly.

For several minutes, nothing happened.

Then the bathroom vent rattled.

Everyone turned.

A metal panel shifted above the sink.

Jared dropped down onto the counter and landed heavily on the floor.

Courtney screamed.

Mercer reached for the door.

Jared blocked him.

His suit was torn at the shoulder. Dust streaked his white shirt.

The polished businessman was gone.

“What do you want?” Shelby asked.

“The phone.”

She held it against her chest.

“You confessed on it.”

“I can explain what I said.”

“You said I wasn’t supposed to wake up.”

“You were supposed to remain sedated until the transfer.”

“That doesn’t help you.”

His eyes moved toward the steel document box.

“And the recording.”

Shelby understood.

He was not there to hurt her.

Not yet.

He was there to destroy evidence.

Jared stepped closer.

Melissa positioned herself beside the bed.

“You won’t reach her.”

Jared laughed.

“You’re a nurse.”

“And you’re a coward.”

His face twisted.

He grabbed the IV stand and shoved it aside. The base struck the wall.

The sound thundered through the room.

Shelby did not flinch.

“You’ve already lost.”

“I built everything.”

“With my money.”

“I made your family relevant.”

“My family’s name opened every door you ever walked through.”

He moved closer.

Shelby raised the phone.

The camera was now recording video.

Jared saw himself on the screen.

His torn clothing.

His rage.

His desperation.

He stopped.

Shelby spoke quietly.

“Tell me why you did it.”

His chest rose and fell.

“You had everything without earning it.”

“And that made you hate me?”

“It made me understand that people like you never appreciate power.”

“You cut open your wife because you were jealous of her inheritance.”

“I gave you seven years.”

“You stole seven years.”

He reached toward the phone.

Courtney stood suddenly.

“Jared.”

He turned.

She held the blue medical folder.

During the confusion, she had retrieved it.

Inside were the remaining original documents.

Courtney backed toward the hallway door.

“If you touch her, I drop this outside.”

Jared stared at her.

“You’re nothing without me.”

Courtney’s face trembled.

“Maybe. But my child won’t be.”

She opened the door.

Security officers rushed in.

Jared tried to run toward the bathroom.

Dr. Mercer stepped into his path.

Jared collided with him, lost his balance, and fell to one knee.

Security restrained him.

There was no dramatic speech.

No heroic punch.

Only the sound of Jared breathing hard as his wrists were secured behind him.

He looked at Shelby one last time.

“You’ll regret this.”

Shelby sat straighter despite the pain.

“No, Jared. I regret not seeing you sooner.”

They took him away.

But justice had only begun.

The surgery could not be undone.
