Chapter 11 - The Woman Inside the Family

Westbridge Freight had competed with Romano Logistics for twenty years.

The rivalry was aggressive.

But legal.

At least Lorenzo thought so.

Federal investigators uncovered a consulting agreement between Bianca and a Westbridge shell company.

She provided market intelligence.

Expansion plans.

Private family information.

Even Lorenzo’s travel schedule.

Julian claimed he knew nothing.

Victor admitted he knew about “some consulting.”

Bianca refused to speak.

Then investigators found the oldest payment.

It arrived four days after Sofia and Julian announced their engagement.

Lorenzo sat in stunned silence.

“You married into my family while your mother was selling information about us.”

Julian finally broke.

“I didn’t know at the beginning.”

“At the beginning?”

Sofia caught the phrase immediately.

“When did you know?”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Two years ago.”

Sofia’s voice became quiet.

“And you stayed.”

“Yes.”

“And you let her keep doing it.”

“I was trying to manage her.”

“No.”

Sofia shook her head.

“You were benefiting from it.”

Hale Capital had received financing through Westbridge-connected lenders.

There it was.

Bianca sold information.

Westbridge helped keep the Hales alive.

Then Hale Capital collapsed anyway.

Bianca needed a bigger rescue.

Nico became leverage.

The baby plot had two possible payoffs.

Ransom Lorenzo.

Or destabilize him badly enough that Westbridge could exploit Romano Logistics during a major acquisition.

Lorenzo almost admired how many layers of greed could fit into one family.

Almost.

Federal prosecutors widened the case.

Westbridge executives were subpoenaed.

The CEO denied knowing anything about kidnapping.

Evidence later suggested he likely hadn’t.

Bianca had gone far beyond whatever corporate espionage relationship originally existed.

She saw opportunity everywhere.

A marriage.

A pregnancy.

A newborn.

A grieving mother.

To Bianca, people became assets the moment they could be priced.

Sofia finally understood why Bianca always seemed uncomfortable with genuine affection.

She didn’t understand relationships that weren’t transactions.

Meanwhile, Nico was discharged from the hospital.

Lorenzo arranged private security at Sofia’s townhouse.

Sofia refused to return to the home she shared with Julian.

She moved temporarily into Lorenzo’s estate outside the city.

The first night, she sat awake beside Nico’s crib until dawn.

Every sound frightened her.

Every car outside.

Every shadow beneath the door.

Therapy began the following week.

Sofia hated needing it.

Then she realized that was Julian’s voice in her head too.

The idea that fear meant weakness.

Her therapist told her:

“Trauma is not evidence that they were right about you.”

Sofia wrote the sentence down.

Three months later, she walked into court carrying that notebook.

Julian looked at her across the courtroom.

He appeared thinner.

Smaller.

Without the family money, the tailored confidence had disappeared.

His attorney offered a plea.

Sofia refused to request leniency.

But she also refused vengeance.

“Tell the truth,” she said.

“That’s all I want.”

Julian looked at her.

Then looked at Bianca.

May you like

For the first time in his life, he chose himself over his mother.

He agreed to testify.
