Chapter 12 - What Julian Knew
Julian testified for six hours.
He admitted the forged trust.
The false medical file.
The ransom plan.
The Mercer arrangement.
The sedative.
He denied planning physical harm to Lorenzo or Sofia.
Prosecutors challenged him repeatedly.
Some jurors believed parts of his testimony.
Some clearly did not.
Then came Sofia.
Her attorney had warned her.
There would be things she hadn’t heard.
She listened anyway.
Julian described the night Victor first suggested temporarily taking Nico.
“I said no.”
Sofia’s heart jumped.
Then he continued.
“For about a week.”
The hope vanished.
Why did he change his mind?
Money.
Hale Capital needed $63 million immediately.
Bianca convinced him Nico would be safe.
Victor said the Whitmores’ home had security.
Ethan promised the hospital paperwork would prevent an early alarm.
Julian told himself Nico would be gone less than forty-eight hours.
He told himself Lorenzo would pay.
He told himself Sofia would forgive him once the family business survived.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did you consider what your wife would experience believing her newborn son had disappeared?”
Julian stared down.
“Yes.”
“And you proceeded?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
A long silence.
Then Julian said:
“Because I thought she would eventually choose me.”
Sofia felt something break.
Not her heart.
That had broken already.
This was the final illusion.
Julian had believed terror could force loyalty.
If Lorenzo paid, Julian would become the man who “recovered” Nico.
He planned to comfort Sofia afterward.
To position himself as her protector.
He wanted to create the wound and then receive gratitude for the bandage.
Lorenzo looked at his daughter.
Sofia was crying.
But she didn’t look away.
Julian finally looked toward her.
“I loved you.”
Sofia shook her head.
“No.”
The judge ordered silence.
Sofia whispered anyway.
“You loved being chosen.”
That was different.
She had spent years choosing him over warning signs.
Over her father.
Sometimes over herself.
Julian didn’t love Sofia’s freedom.
He loved winning her allegiance.
When testimony ended, Victor accepted a plea agreement.
Patricia followed.
Ethan pleaded guilty to federal charges connected to Mercer.
Bianca refused every offer.
She still believed she could beat the case.
That arrogance became her undoing.
Because the prosecution introduced the final recording.
It came from the hospital lounge.
Nurse Claire’s badge camera had activated automatically when she pressed the emergency alert during the confrontation.
The footage captured Victor taking Nico.
Julian attacking Lorenzo.
And Bianca standing beside the blanket rack whispering into her phone.
Audio enhancement recovered six words:
“Plan failed. He still has the boy.”
