Chapter 13 - The Verdict

Bianca’s defense collapsed over three days.

Her attorney argued she had been frightened.

Confused.

Unaware Victor intended to remove Nico.

Then prosecutors played the recordings.

“The mother will be sedated.”

“Once the boy is moved…”

“Plan failed. He still has the boy.”

There was no explanation large enough to hide inside.

Caroline Whitmore testified.

Patricia testified.

Ethan testified.

Julian testified.

Claire testified.

Then Lorenzo took the stand.

Bianca’s attorney tried to portray him as an aggressive billionaire who hated the Hale family.

“Did you strike Julian Hale at the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Did you shove Victor Hale?”

“Yes.”

“Were you angry?”

Lorenzo looked directly at the jury.

“I opened a door and saw one man carrying my screaming newborn grandson away while another stopped me from reaching him.”

The attorney paused.

Lorenzo continued.

“I’m not proud that the room became violent. I am grateful the baby never left it.”

That distinction mattered.

He did not pretend to be flawless.

He simply told the truth.

Sofia testified last.

She described waking exhausted.

The strange sedation.

Victor reaching for Nico.

Her father entering.

Julian’s words.

Bianca’s face.

The forged documents.

Then the years before that.

The quiet manipulation.

The medical questions.

The signatures she couldn’t fully remember.

The way Julian trained her to doubt herself.

The prosecutor asked one final question.

“What do you want from this court?”

Sofia looked toward Nico’s empty stroller beside Claire.

“Nothing for me.”

She breathed.

“I want my son to grow up knowing that what happened to him mattered.”

The jury deliberated for nineteen hours.

Victor had already pleaded.

Julian had pleaded under cooperation terms.

Bianca stood alone for the verdict.

Conspiracy to kidnap: guilty.

Attempted custodial interference: guilty.

Fraud: guilty.

Forgery conspiracy: guilty.

Drugging-related charges: guilty.

Financial conspiracy: guilty.

Additional counts connected to Mercer and corporate espionage followed.

Bianca’s face barely moved.

Until the judge revoked bail.

Then she turned toward Julian.

“You did this.”

Julian stared at her.

“No, Mom.”

His voice shook.

“You taught me to do this.”

That was not forgiveness.

It was recognition.

Bianca was taken away.

Outside, hundreds of reporters waited.

Lorenzo asked Sofia whether she wanted to use the private exit.

She thought about it.

Then shook her head.

“No.”

She carried Nico through the courthouse doors herself.

Flashbulbs exploded.

Questions flew.

Sofia said only one sentence.

“My son is going home.”

Lorenzo walked beside her.

Not in front.

May you like

Not controlling.

Beside.
