Chapter 9 - The Contingency

Victor tried to explain away the insurance policy.

“It was business.”

Lorenzo almost smiled.

“On my life?”

The policy listed a corporate beneficiary connected to a proposed Romano-Hale joint venture.

A venture Lorenzo had never approved.

His signature was forged.

Again.

Then investigators examined the medical directive.

It claimed Lorenzo had a serious cardiac condition and had designated Julian to participate in emergency decision-making if Sofia was unavailable.

It was nonsense.

But paired with a fake hospital admission, it could have created confusion long enough for someone to control access to Lorenzo.

The “contingency” wasn’t a fully developed murder plot.

Not yet.

But prosecutors believed it showed preparation for coercion far beyond kidnapping.

Victor understood the danger.

So he turned on Bianca.

“She designed the documents.”

Bianca turned on Julian.

“He knew about the ransom.”

Julian turned on Victor.

“He chose Mercer.”

Within forty-eight hours, the Hale family stopped behaving like a family at all.

Each wanted to survive.

Sofia watched it happen from her hospital room.

Nico slept beside her.

Lorenzo stood at the window.

“You were right,” she said.

He turned.

“About Julian.”

Lorenzo didn’t answer.

“I hated you for it.”

“I know.”

“You kept saying something felt wrong.”

“I should have said less.”

Sofia looked surprised.

Lorenzo sat down.

“I pushed too hard. Every time I criticized him, you defended him harder.”

That was true.

“I thought you were trying to control me.”

“Maybe sometimes I was.”

He sighed.

“You were my only child. Your mother died when you were nineteen. I confused protecting you with deciding for you.”

Sofia’s eyes filled.

“But today…”

“Today was different.”

Lorenzo looked at Nico.

“Today somebody touched my grandson.”

Sofia laughed through tears.

“That explains the food cart.”

Lorenzo almost smiled.

Then his face became serious.

“You saved him too.”

“I could barely stand.”

“You screamed.”

“Dad…”

“You made sure everyone knew something was wrong.”

Claire entered carrying new blankets.

Lorenzo stood.

The nurse hesitated.

“There’s someone asking to see Sofia.”

“Who?”

“A woman named Caroline Whitmore.”

Sofia agreed.

Caroline entered alone.

She looked broken.

“I need to apologize.”

Sofia held Nico closer.

Caroline began crying.

“I thought I was adopting a baby whose mother had chosen us. I decorated a nursery.”

Sofia believed her.

That made the situation sadder.

Caroline handed Rebecca a folder.

“Daniel found this in the documents Victor gave us.”

Inside was a photograph of Nico’s ultrasound.

Sofia recognized it.

It had been taken at twenty-two weeks.

On the back, Victor had written:

Confirmed male. Romano line secured.

Sofia felt sick.

They had been marketing her child before birth.

Then Caroline gave them something else.

A voice message Bianca accidentally left on Daniel Whitmore’s phone.

Bianca’s voice said:

“Once the boy is moved, Sofia becomes useful only if she stays cooperative.”

Lorenzo looked at Sofia.

May you like

Rebecca looked at the prosecutor.

Because “stays cooperative” sounded very different now that they knew about the sedatives.
