Chapter 5 - The Couple Downstairs

Mercer Family Services operated out of Connecticut.

Its website looked respectable.

Private placements.

Surrogacy support.

Newborn transportation.

Family matching.

But state regulators had investigated the company twice.

Both cases disappeared after settlements.

Lorenzo’s attorneys obtained the name of its director.

Ethan Cole.

The same man waiting downstairs.

Hospital security found his vehicle three blocks away.

Inside was the infant transport carrier.

A diaper bag.

Blankets.

A prepaid phone.

And an envelope containing copies of Nico’s forged Mercer records.

There was also an address.

A private townhouse on the Upper East Side.

The name written beside it was Daniel and Caroline Whitmore.

Sofia had heard that name too.

The Whitmores were wealthy.

Extremely wealthy.

They had attended Julian and Sofia’s wedding.

Caroline had hugged Sofia during her pregnancy and said, “You have no idea how lucky you are.”

Police went to the townhouse.

Daniel Whitmore immediately requested an attorney.

Caroline did something different.

She started crying.

Then she told them everything.

She and Daniel had struggled with infertility for years.

Victor Hale approached them privately.

He said a young mother had agreed to a confidential adoption but needed financial support.

The Whitmores paid Mercer Family Services $1.8 million.

They were told the baby would be born in early spring.

Male.

Healthy.

Private transfer.

Sofia felt sick hearing it.

“My son was sold?”

Rebecca answered carefully.

“They attempted to sell access to him.”

Caroline insisted she never knew Sofia was the mother.

She believed the adoption was legitimate.

When shown Sofia’s picture, she covered her mouth.

“That’s Julian’s wife.”

The detective nodded.

Caroline whispered, “Oh my God.”

Victor had promised the Whitmores a baby.

Bianca created the fake identity.

Patricia created hospital records.

Ethan would remove Nico.

Then what?

Sofia would wake up without her son.

How could they possibly explain that?

The answer came from the toxicology screen.

A sedative not prescribed to Sofia was found in her system.

Bianca’s tea had contained it.

The plan became horrifyingly clear.

Sofia would be heavily sedated.

Nico would disappear under the Mercer identity.

Then Julian would claim a neonatal emergency had occurred.

If necessary, false records would show a transfer.

By the time Sofia was alert enough to challenge the story, Nico would be outside the hospital system.

Claire began crying when she understood.

“I almost left the room.”

Sofia squeezed her hand.

“But you didn’t.”

Claire had noticed the transfer paperwork didn’t match the physician’s order.

That was why she remained.

That was why Victor had been forced to act himself when Ethan refused to enter the maternity floor without proper clearance.

Lorenzo looked at Sofia.

“What happened this morning wasn’t the beginning of their plan.”

“No.”

“It was the plan falling apart.”

Victor finally spoke from across the room.

“You’re making this sound worse than it was.”

Sofia stared at him.

“You tried to sell my baby.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“Nobody was supposed to get hurt.”

Lorenzo took one step toward him.

“You grabbed a newborn from his crib.”

Victor looked away.

Then Julian whispered:

“It wasn’t supposed to be permanent.”

Sofia turned slowly.

“What did you say?”

Julian immediately regretted speaking.

Lorenzo did not let him escape.

“Permanent?”

Julian closed his eyes.

Sofia’s voice broke.

“You were planning to bring Nico back?”

Julian said nothing.

Rebecca understood first.

“This wasn’t only an illegal adoption scheme.”

She looked at the trust documents.

May you like

Then at Julian.

“It was ransom.”
