Chapter 8 - The Medicine Cabinet

Police searched the Hale townhouse that evening.
They found more than anyone expected.
Inside Bianca’s bedroom safe were prescription bottles belonging to other family members.
Sedatives.
Anti-anxiety medication.
Painkillers.
Some expired.
Some recent.
There was also a notebook.
Dates.
Dosages.
Names.
Sofia appeared repeatedly.
Before family dinners.
Before legal meetings.
Before a vacation where Bianca had convinced her to sign revised marital documents.
Lorenzo read the notebook once.
Then handed it to detectives because his hands were shaking.
Sofia felt violated in a way she couldn’t describe.
“How many times?”
Investigators couldn’t yet say.
Bianca’s attorney insisted the notes related to medication reminders.
Nobody believed it.
Then Rebecca reviewed documents Sofia had signed during the past two years.
Several major agreements were executed on dates appearing in Bianca’s notebook.
One gave Julian expanded authority over joint marital property.
Another granted him access to emergency medical decisions.
A third allowed Hale advisers to review certain estate documents.
Sofia had remembered signing papers.
She hadn’t remembered understanding some of them.
Now she knew why.
Julian tried distancing himself from Bianca.
“I didn’t know she was doing that.”
Sofia looked at him through the interview-room glass.
“You knew about today.”
He lowered his eyes.
“That’s enough.”
The investigation into the earlier miscarriage remained inconclusive.
No evidence proved Bianca caused it.
Sofia refused to invent certainty simply because she hated the woman now.
That mattered to Lorenzo.
“We follow the evidence,” he said.
“All of it.”
“And nothing more.”
Exactly.
Because Margaret—sorry Bianca—had spent years manipulating reality.
Sofia would not become like her.
The evidence they had was already devastating.
Drugging.
Forgery.
Attempted kidnapping.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Illegal transfer documents.
Financial coercion.
Then Ethan Cole was arrested.
The Mercer director had been trying to cross into Canada.
He cooperated almost immediately.
Mercer Family Services had facilitated questionable private placements for years.
Victor knew it.
Bianca knew it.
Julian had attended two meetings.
Ethan produced recorded calls.
In one, Bianca said:
“The mother will be sedated. The father will manage the paperwork.”
In another, Victor said:
“You only need the boy for forty-eight hours.”
Then Julian’s voice appeared.
Quiet.
unmistakable.
“My wife cannot know where he is.”
Sofia listened once.
Only once.
Afterward, she removed her wedding ring.
She placed it on Rebecca’s desk.
“I want a divorce.”
Lorenzo didn’t celebrate.
He simply put an arm around his daughter.
Rebecca nodded.
“We’ll file today.”
But Ethan had one more recording.
This call wasn’t about Nico.
It was about Lorenzo.
Bianca asked Victor:
“What happens if the old man refuses even after we have the baby?”
Victor answered:
“Then we use the contingency.”
Nobody knew what that meant.
Until police searched Victor’s luggage.
