Chapter 4 - The Trust Sofia Never Signed

Lorenzo’s attorneys arrived before noon.

The trust documents were real.

The signatures were not.

Sofia’s name appeared eleven times.

Each signature looked authentic enough to fool someone who didn’t know her.

But Sofia knew immediately.

“I sign my middle initial on legal documents.”

None of these signatures included it.

The trust named Julian as managing trustee.

Victor was successor trustee.

Bianca was listed as guardian adviser.

Sofia’s father appeared nowhere.

Neither did Sofia’s own authority.

The structure was designed to place every decision involving Nico’s supposed future assets in Hale hands.

But Nico didn’t own anything.

Not yet.

Lorenzo turned to his lawyer, Rebecca Shaw.

“What were they expecting him to inherit?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“You.”

Lorenzo went still.

Under Romano family planning documents, Sofia was Lorenzo’s only child.

If Lorenzo died, she would eventually control Romano Logistics and several family holding companies.

If Sofia died afterward, much of that wealth would flow to Nico.

Julian’s secret trust positioned him between the child and the assets.

Sofia’s skin went cold.

“You built a trust around Dad’s death?”

Julian snapped.

“It was estate planning.”

“With forged signatures?”

“I was going to explain.”

“When?”

No answer.

“After my father died?”

“Sofia—”

“After I died?”

Julian’s face changed.

The room went silent.

Lorenzo moved toward him.

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

Not to protect Julian.

To keep the room from exploding.

Then Rebecca found another document.

A private custody declaration.

It stated that if Sofia suffered “postpartum psychiatric instability,” temporary decision-making authority for Nico would transfer to Julian and Bianca.

Claire stared at the page.

“That diagnosis doesn’t exist.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Not yet.”

The wording mattered.

Somebody expected Sofia to be declared unstable after giving birth.

Suddenly Bianca’s behavior made sense.

The constant questions during pregnancy.

“Are you sleeping?”

“Do you feel depressed?”

“Do you ever think you can’t handle motherhood?”

Sofia had assumed Bianca was being intrusive.

Now she understood.

They had been building a narrative.

Lorenzo turned toward his daughter.

“Did anyone give you anything after delivery?”

Sofia thought.

Pain medication.

Fluids.

Vitamin supplements.

Then she remembered Bianca bringing her tea during the night.

“You need to sleep,” Bianca had insisted.

Sofia had drunk half.

She became unusually disoriented afterward.

Claire’s expression changed.

“You were far more sedated than your medication chart explained.”

Hospital toxicology was ordered.

The cup was recovered from the trash because housekeeping had not yet cleared the room.

Marcus sealed it as evidence.

Bianca rose.

“I’m leaving.”

“No,” Sofia said.

Everyone turned.

For the first time, she didn’t sound frightened.

She sounded like Lorenzo.

“You spent months planning around my child. You can stay five more minutes and watch us find out exactly what you gave me.”

Bianca sat down again.

Her face had lost all color.

Then Lorenzo’s phone rang.

His CFO had discovered why the name Mercer had been chosen.

Mercer wasn’t a person.

It was a company.

Mercer Family Services.

And six weeks earlier, Bianca Hale had wired them $250,000.
