Chapter 11 - The Video Played in Court
The courtroom was packed.
Reporters filled the back rows.
The case had become local news after investigators connected Ethan’s construction company to multiple fraudulent loans.
Claire entered wearing a simple navy dress.
No sling.
No fever.
No wedding ring.
Ethan watched her from the defense table.
He looked thinner, but his expression still carried the same contempt.
His attorney began by portraying Claire as a wealthy heiress determined to punish a husband who wanted independence.
Then prosecutors played the kitchen video.
The room became silent.
Claire appeared on-screen beside the empty table, visibly unsteady.
Ethan approached from behind.
His hands drove into her back.
Her body hit the floor.
Medicine scattered.
Patricia did not move.
Then Ethan’s voice filled the courtroom.
“She’s barely conscious. She’ll sign anything.”
Several jurors looked away from the screen and directly at him.
The defense attorney argued that the shove was not intended to cause injury.
The prosecutor froze the image at the moment Ethan’s feet braced and his torso drove forward.
“This was not accidental contact.”
The next clip showed him tossing the thermometer beside Claire.

Claire testified next.
She described the fever, the pain, and the moment she noticed the missing page.
“Why did you sign?” the prosecutor asked.
“Because I understood the papers better than he believed I did.”
“Were you surrendering the house?”
“No.”
“What were you doing?”
“Giving him the document he thought he wanted, with the truth written inside it.”
The prosecutor displayed the acknowledgment schedule.
Ethan’s initials appeared beside Claire’s correction stating he had no recorded title interest.
His own signature confirmed acceptance.
The defense attorney stood.
“Mrs. Mercer, isn’t it true you planned to humiliate my client?”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“No. I planned to survive him.”
Laura testified about the staircase.
Madison testified about the affair and financial transfers.
Walter described destroying evidence under Patricia’s instruction.
Finally, Patricia took the stand.
Ethan stared at her.
She would not look at him.
“Did you see your son assault Claire?” the prosecutor asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you help him prepare the divorce scheme?”
“Yes.”
“Did Claire threaten or provoke him?”
“No.”
“What did she do?”
