Chapter 4 - The Missing Page

Paramedics entered the house.

Claire’s temperature had climbed.

Her blood pressure was dangerously low, and the fall had injured her shoulder.

As they placed her on a stretcher, Ethan followed them toward the door.

“Claire, tell them this was an accident.”

She stared at him.

He lowered his voice.

“If you turn this into something bigger, you’ll regret it.”

Rebecca heard every word.

So did one of the paramedics.

Claire did not answer.

She was too tired to argue, but she no longer needed to.

The truth had witnesses now.

Before leaving, Rebecca retrieved the divorce folder from the floor.

Ethan tried to stop her.

“That belongs to me.”

“It was presented to my client for signature.”

Patricia grabbed Rebecca’s arm.

Rebecca looked down at her hand.

Patricia released her immediately.

At the hospital, doctors diagnosed Claire with severe influenza complicated by dehydration and pneumonia.

She would have needed emergency treatment even without the assault.

The shove had caused a partial shoulder dislocation and deep bruising, but no fracture.

Rebecca remained beside her until the medication brought Claire’s fever down.

When Claire woke several hours later, Rebecca placed the divorce papers on the bedside table.

“There are two things you need to know.”

Claire looked at her.

“First, Ethan used an outdated template.”

“That’s the page he missed?”

“Partly.”

Rebecca opened the agreement.

“The clause you marked confirms that separate trust property stays separate. But the page he truly missed was the acknowledgment schedule.”

Claire remembered it.

The final attachment listed all property each spouse claimed to own.

Ethan’s attorney had entered the mansion under Ethan’s assets.

But the space required a supporting deed reference.

There was none.

Claire had written:

**Ownership disputed. Occupancy only. No recorded title interest.**

Then she initialed it.

By signing the agreement after her correction, Ethan had accepted that description.

“Can he claim he didn’t notice?” Claire asked.

“He can try.”

Rebecca turned another page.

“But he initialed every attachment before giving the papers to you.”

Ethan’s impatience had trapped him.

He had signed first because he believed Claire would be too sick and frightened to read anything.

Rebecca continued.

“The second issue is larger. I traced the renovation payments.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Patricia’s company?”

“Yes. But the company didn’t perform most of the work.”

“Then where did the money go?”

Rebecca opened a spreadsheet.

Nearly six hundred thousand dollars had been routed from Claire’s inheritance through Patricia’s company into accounts belonging to Ethan.

Some of it paid business debts.

Some funded luxury travel Claire had never taken.

And some went to a woman named Madison Cole.

Claire stared at the name.

“Who is she?”

Rebecca hesitated.
