Chapter 7 - The Camera in the Kitchen
Ethan denied entering the mansion.
Patricia claimed she had returned every key she possessed.
Madison had never been given access.
That left one possibility.
An employee.
Claire reviewed the household staff records.
Most workers had been dismissed months earlier after Ethan said the renovation costs were too high.
Only one person still came regularly.
Walter Briggs, Ethan’s business manager.
Walter handled deliveries, bills, insurance paperwork, and security updates.
He had been in the kitchen the morning before the assault.
Claire remembered seeing him near the chandelier controls.
At the time, she thought he was checking a wiring problem.
Rebecca contacted him.
He refused to answer.
Police searched his office and discovered blank deeds, forged notary stamps, and copies of Claire’s financial records.
Walter had prepared the documents Ethan used to move money.
But he had also kept something Ethan did not know existed.
Backups.
Walter distrusted everyone.
He copied emails, contracts, and security footage in case Ethan tried to blame him.
One backup drive contained video from the kitchen.
The mansion’s visible cameras had been turned off during the Easter gathering.
But Walter had installed a small temporary camera while testing the new security system.
It captured the entire assault.
Claire swaying beside the table.
Ethan approaching from behind.
The force of the shove.
Her fall.
Patricia’s expression.
The divorce folder hitting the floor.
Most damaging of all, the camera recorded the conversation before the violence.
Ethan had said:
“She’s barely conscious. She’ll sign anything.”
Patricia replied:
“Make sure she waives the house before the medication wears off.”
Claire watched the footage once.
Then she asked Rebecca to turn it off.
The truth hurt, even when it proved she had not imagined anything.
Walter was arrested while attempting to board a flight in New Jersey.
Under questioning, he admitted returning to the mansion and removing the records.
He claimed Patricia ordered him to destroy them.
Patricia denied it.
Then police recovered a deleted voicemail.
Her voice was unmistakable.
“Clean Ethan’s office before Claire’s lawyers get there.”
The charges expanded.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Evidence tampering.
Financial exploitation.
Patricia’s attorney began discussing a plea agreement.
But Ethan refused every offer.
He still believed Claire would avoid a public trial to protect her reputation.
He sent a message through his attorney.
