Chapter 6 - Patricia’s Company
Patricia had always spoken about sacrifice.
She told Claire that raising Ethan alone after her husband died had taught her to survive without help.
She used that story to justify everything.
Her interference.
Her control.
Her belief that Ethan deserved whatever he wanted.
But Patricia had not been helpless for years.
She owned a consulting company called Caldwell Residential Services.
On paper, the company coordinated high-end home renovations.
In reality, it existed mainly to receive Claire’s inheritance money.
Rebecca traced every payment.
Claire would transfer funds for flooring, cabinetry, or structural repairs.
Ethan would send invoices from Patricia’s company.
Patricia kept a percentage.
The rest went to Ethan.
The actual contractors received only a fraction of what Claire paid.
When investigators confronted Patricia, she claimed Ethan handled everything.
Then they showed her emails she had written.
One message read:
**Keep Claire away from the final invoices. She asks too many questions.**
Another said:
**Once the divorce is signed, change the locks before she returns.**
Patricia stopped cooperating.
She hired an attorney and moved into a hotel.
But she made one serious mistake.
She called Madison.
Madison recorded the conversation.
“You don’t understand Claire,” Patricia said. “She uses illness and weakness to control people.”
Madison replied, “I saw the hospital photos.”
“She fell.”
“Ethan admitted he pushed her.”
Patricia went silent.
Then she changed tactics.
“If you testify, Ethan will lose everything. Your baby will have nothing.”
Madison looked at her swollen belly.
“My child already has nothing if his father is a criminal.”
Patricia’s voice hardened.
“We can protect you financially.”
“How?”
“There are accounts Claire doesn’t know about.”
The call connected Patricia directly to concealed funds.
Madison gave the recording to Rebecca.
Within twenty-four hours, the court froze Patricia’s company accounts.
Investigators recovered over three hundred thousand dollars.
But more than half the stolen money remained missing.
Claire left the hospital wearing a sling.
Rebecca arranged for her to stay at a private rehabilitation cottage owned by the trust.
Claire refused to return to the mansion while Ethan and Patricia still had access.
A judge granted a temporary protective order.
Ethan was ordered to remain away from Claire.
He was also ordered to surrender his keys.
He handed over three.
The house security system showed four active key fobs.
One remained missing.
That night, the alarm at the mansion was disabled from inside.
Someone entered the house.
By morning, Ethan’s office had been stripped of computers, files, and financial records.
Only one object remained on the desk.
