Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Apartment
Madison Cole was twenty-nine years old.
She worked as a marketing director for Ethan’s construction firm.
Claire had met her twice.
Both times, Madison had smiled warmly and complimented Claire’s marriage.
The hospital room suddenly felt too small.
“How much did he give her?” Claire asked.
“More than one hundred and forty thousand dollars.”
Rebecca showed her payments for rent, furniture, jewelry, and medical appointments.
One transfer contained a note.

Claire closed her eyes.
For years, Ethan told her he was not ready for children.

She asked Claire to describe what happened in the kitchen.
Claire told her everything.

Patricia’s mocking question.

Claire hesitated.
There had been no previous strike.

He blocked doors.

Once, he drove at dangerous speed because Claire refused to cancel dinner with a friend.
“He never hit me before tonight,” Claire said.
“But you were afraid he might?”
“Yes.”
Lena nodded.

The phrase stayed with Claire.
For years, Ethan had taught her to dismiss her own fear as oversensitivity.
Now a stranger treated it as evidence.
The next afternoon, Rebecca visited Madison’s apartment with a court-authorized financial investigator.
Madison answered the door visibly pregnant.
When she saw Claire’s attorney, her face went pale.
“I was going to tell her,” Madison whispered.
“Tell Claire what?”
“That Ethan said the divorce was already final.”
Rebecca showed her the marriage record.
Madison began shaking.
“He told me Claire had moved to Europe.”
Then Ethan called Madison.
She placed the phone on speaker.
His first words exposed everything.
