Chapter 11 - The Custody Hearing
Eric’s attorney presented Allison’s military career as proof of future absence.
“She has accepted a demanding command role,” he argued. “Mr. Grant offers stability.”
Allison’s attorney stood.
“Mr. Grant is under investigation for fraud, coercive control, identity theft, and destruction of evidence.”
“None of those accusations have resulted in conviction.”
The judge reviewed the hospital records.
The phone recording.
The hidden cameras.
The intercepted promotion letter.
Eric claimed the foyer confrontation had been misunderstood.
He blamed Dana for the shove.
Lorraine for packing Allison’s belongings.
Wallace for the financial plan.
Allison for choosing military service.
Then the judge asked him one question.
“Why did you take your wife’s phone?”
“She was emotional.”
“Why did you throw it?”
“To prevent escalation.”
“You prevented a bleeding postoperative patient from requesting help?”
Eric hesitated.
The judge continued.
“Why was her medication hidden upstairs?”
“I did not hide it.”
“Why were her medals thrown beside an open door in winter?”
“My mother packed them.”
“Why did you order newborn infants into the snow?”
Eric’s jaw tightened.
“I knew she would not actually leave.”
Allison stared at him.
He had never expected her to obey.
He expected her to beg.
To sign.
To surrender.
The judge played the recording where Eric discussed provoking Allison for custody.
Eric called it a joke.
Then Dana testified.
She admitted the forgery, the affair, the planned confrontation, and the corporate motive.
Lorraine testified next.
She claimed she only wanted to protect the babies.
The judge asked, “Did you see Captain Grant bleeding?”
“Yes.”
“Did you call for medical help?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She was being dramatic.”
“Did you reach toward a newborn after his mother ordered you not to?”
Lorraine had no answer.
The judge granted Allison sole temporary legal and physical custody.
Eric received no contact until he completed a psychological assessment and the criminal investigation clarified the risk.
Lorraine was prohibited from contacting Allison or the twins.
Eric rose angrily.
“You’re taking my sons over one argument.”
Allison met his eyes.
“No. You lost access because you treated them like property.”
But the military appointment deadline had passed while Allison recovered.
She had protected her babies.
