Chapter 2 - The Letter Beneath the Medals

The security officer immediately called for medical assistance.

Colonel Hale crossed the foyer toward Allison.

“Can you stay upright?”

Allison gripped the back of a chair.

“Yes, sir.”

Her voice remained steady.

Her body did not.

Hale removed his dress jacket and placed it carefully around her shoulders.

One of the twins continued crying.

Allison lowered herself beside the carrier despite the pain.

“Captain, do not lift him,” Hale warned.

“He needs to hear me.”

She rested one hand against the pale blue blanket.

The baby slowly quieted.

Colonel Hale turned toward Eric.

“Where is her hospital medication?”

Eric glanced toward Lorraine.

Lorraine folded her arms.

“She doesn’t need narcotics while caring for newborns.”

Allison looked up.

“My prescription was inside the diaper bag.”

Dana’s eyes shifted toward the staircase.

“The bag upstairs?”

Allison’s jaw tightened.

“You moved it?”

Dana said nothing.

The security officer went upstairs.

Hale crouched beside the cardboard box Lorraine had thrown near the door.

Inside were Allison’s uniforms, photographs, medals, and official papers.

One sealed military envelope lay underneath them.

Colonel Hale recognized the markings immediately.

“This was delivered yesterday.”

Allison stared at it.

“I’ve never seen that.”

Hale checked the delivery receipt.

Eric’s signature appeared at the bottom.

The Colonel slowly faced him.

“Why did you intercept correspondence addressed to your wife?”

“I didn’t open it.”

“No. You hid it.”

Eric stepped forward.

“This is private family business.”

“You keep saying that as though marriage erases assault.”

The security officer returned carrying the diaper bag.

Allison’s pain medication was inside.

So were feeding supplies, diapers, and discharge instructions.

Colonel Hale opened the military letter in front of Allison.

It informed her that she had been selected to command a newly established Army humanitarian rapid-response unit.

The appointment came with promotion consideration and national authority.

Allison stared at the page.

Eric had told her the board rejected her because pregnancy made her unreliable.

Hale looked at her.

“Your acceptance deadline is tomorrow.”

Allison turned toward Eric.

“You said they chose someone else.”

Eric’s lips parted.

No answer came.

Dana slowly removed her hand from his arm.

Then the security officer found another envelope inside the diaper bag.

It contained documents transferring Allison’s house into Dana Crowley’s name.

Allison’s signature appeared on every page.
