Chapter 1 - The Chain Around Sophie’s Ankle

The slap cracked through the entryway.

Sophie hit the floor beside a mountain of spilled laundry.

The metal chain around her ankle snapped tight against the wooden staircase post.

She cried so hard she could barely breathe.

Margaret Parker stood over her.

“DROP IT AGAIN AND YOU WON’T HAVE A PLACE TO SLEEP!”

The front door opened.

Emily Parker stepped inside carrying her black office bag.

She stopped.

Her eight-month-old daughter was on the floor.

Clothes were everywhere.

A red mark spread across Sophie’s cheek.

And there was a chain around her ankle.

Emily’s handbag dropped.

“Sophie…”

She ran forward.

“WHO DID THIS TO YOU?”

Sophie reached for her.

Emily dropped to her knees and gathered her against her chest.

That was when Margaret walked toward them.

Not embarrassed.

Not afraid.

Annoyed.

Emily’s hands shook as she worked the small lock open.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

Margaret folded her arms.

“She needs discipline.”

“She’s a child!”

“She’s not a Parker.”

Emily froze.

Margaret looked at Sophie with open disgust.

“You keep forcing that bastard child into this family like saying our name enough times will make it true.”

Something changed inside Emily.

For six months, she had swallowed Margaret’s comments.

She had ignored the way Margaret excluded Sophie from family pictures.

The way she bought gifts for Rachel’s daughters, Chloe and Madison, but nothing for Sophie.

The way Sophie was always seated separately.

Emily had endured it because her housing situation was temporary.

Because she was rebuilding after Daniel’s death.

Because she believed Margaret would eventually soften.

But a chain changed everything.

Emily stood and pulled Sophie behind her.

Then she slapped Margaret.

Margaret staggered against the staircase railing.

Rachel gasped from the dining room.

“Emily!”

Emily didn’t even look at her.

She opened her handbag.

Margaret’s confidence returned.

“You think attacking me changes what she is?”

Emily pulled out a sealed laboratory report.

“No.”

She threw it against Margaret’s chest.

“But this might.”

Margaret caught the papers.

Emily watched her read the laboratory header.

Her face changed before she reached the result.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Emily noticed.

That reaction was wrong.

She had expected disbelief.

Maybe anger.

Not fear.

Margaret’s fingers tightened around the report.

Rachel stepped closer.

“What is that?”

Margaret folded the pages immediately.

“Nothing.”

Emily stared at her.

“It’s a DNA report.”

Rachel looked at Emily.

“Whose?”

Emily answered slowly.

“Sophie’s.”

Margaret suddenly tore the report in half.

Emily went completely still.

Rachel gasped.

“Mom!”

Margaret ripped it again.

Then again.

Tiny pieces fell across the marble floor.

Emily stared at them.

“You already knew.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“I know enough.”

“No.”

Emily moved closer.

“You knew what that test was going to say before you read it.”

Margaret’s eyes flicked toward Rachel.

One second.

Maybe less.

But Emily saw it.

So did Rachel.

Emily’s stomach turned cold.

The test had been meant to answer one question about Sophie’s father.

Margaret’s reaction had just created a far more dangerous one.

“What are you hiding?”

Margaret stepped over the torn pieces.

“You need to take that child and leave my house.”

Emily lifted Sophie into her arms.

“I will.”

Margaret looked relieved.

Then Emily added:

May you like

“But first I’m going to find out why you’re terrified of my daughter’s DNA.”

For the first time that afternoon, Margaret Parker had nothing cruel to say.
