Chapter 4 - The Box Robert Left Behind
The safe deposit box was still active.
That surprised Emily.
The annual fees had been paid automatically from an account Robert established before his death.
Emily, Rachel, and Marcus entered the bank vault together.
The box contained no jewelry.
No cash.
No will.
Just documents.
The first was a handwritten letter.
Emily recognized her father’s writing instantly.
Emily,
If you are reading this, I failed to fix something I should have stopped years ago.
Her knees weakened.
Rachel reached for her.
Emily kept reading.
Robert wrote that after Emily’s fertility procedure, Margaret told him something had “gone wrong.”
He believed Emily had lost the baby.
Months later, he discovered payments from a Parker company account to Dr. Alan Reed.
Three payments.
$75,000 each.
No invoices.
Robert confronted Margaret.
She claimed the money settled a malpractice issue discreetly because Emily was emotionally fragile.
Robert didn’t believe her.
He investigated quietly.
Then found a second set of payments.
One to Lauren Mills.
$400,000.
Emily covered her mouth.
Rachel whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Robert had tried to confront Lauren.
She refused to speak.
Then disappeared from the company.
His letter continued.
I believe your mother arranged something involving your pregnancy. I never found enough proof to accuse her. If I had, I would have gone to the police myself.
Emily cried openly now.
At the bottom, Robert listed two names.
Dr. Alan Reed.
Margaret Parker.
And a third.
Victor Hale.
Emily frowned.
“Who is Victor Hale?”
Rachel looked confused too.
Marcus searched.
Victor Hale had been an attorney.
Estate planning.
Private trusts.
And eight years ago, he had represented Margaret personally.
Emily looked through the remaining documents.
There were copies of canceled checks.
Clinic correspondence.
A confidentiality agreement signed by Lauren Mills.
Then Marcus found something different.
A trust instrument.
THE PARKER DESCENDANT TRUST.
Established by Emily and Rachel’s grandfather.
It contained one unusual provision.
Twenty-five percent of Parker Family Holdings would transfer into a protected trust for Robert Parker’s first biological grandchild.
Rachel sat down.
“Chloe is the oldest grandchild.”
Emily looked at the dates.
Chloe had been born eleven years ago.
The trust had never been activated.
“Why didn’t Chloe receive it?”
Marcus read further.
The provision applied only to the first grandchild born to Robert’s younger daughter.
Emily.
Rachel went pale.
“That’s you.”
Emily’s hands trembled.
Her grandfather had apparently created the provision because Emily had spent years working beside him before his death.
If Emily produced a biological child, that child would eventually control twenty-five percent of Parker Family Holdings.
Emily stared at Sophie’s photograph on her phone.
Suddenly Margaret’s hatred had a financial shape.
If Sophie was Emily’s biological daughter…
Then Sophie wasn’t just family.
She was the beneficiary Margaret had spent eight years preventing from being recognized.
Rachel whispered:
“Mom has controlled those shares since Dad died.”
Marcus nodded.
“If Sophie should have been legally recognized years ago, Margaret may have been exercising control over assets that never belonged to her.”
Emily’s anger became cold.
“She didn’t chain Sophie because she thought Sophie wasn’t family.”
Rachel looked at her.
