Chapter 9 - Rachel Learned Why Margaret Hated the Trust
Rachel refused to speak for almost ten minutes.
Then she asked:
“Am I Dad’s daughter?”
Emily reached for her.
Rachel pulled away.
“I need an answer.”
Marcus found one.
Robert Parker had discovered early in his marriage that Rachel was not biologically his.
Margaret had conceived Rachel with Thomas Reynolds shortly before marrying Robert.
Robert chose to raise Rachel anyway.
He never changed her name.
Never treated her differently.
But Robert’s father knew.
That explained the unusual trust language.
The Parker Descendant Trust had been drafted to preserve one portion of Parker Family Holdings for Robert’s biological line.
Emily’s future child.
Rachel looked devastated.
“So Grandpa didn’t consider me family.”
Emily sat beside her.
“Dad did.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
“No. It’s better.”
Rachel looked at her.
Emily continued:
“He knew. He stayed. He raised you. He loved you.”
Rachel cried.
For the first time, Emily understood Margaret’s obsession with bloodline.
It wasn’t because Sophie lacked Parker blood.
It was because Margaret had spent decades terrified someone would learn Rachel did.
When Emily became pregnant with Daniel’s child, the trust provision would activate.
That would publicly highlight the distinction Margaret had hidden.
Emily whispered:
“She didn’t remove Sophie because Sophie wasn’t Parker enough.”
Rachel wiped her face.
“She removed her because Sophie was.”

Margaret’s cruelty had been projection.
Every insult.
Every “bastard.”
Every comment about blood.
She had been attacking the child who proved the one truth Margaret couldn’t control.
Rachel stood.
“I’m going to talk to her.”
Emily stopped her.
“Not alone.”
They went together.
Margaret opened the front door and stared at them.
Rachel walked inside.
“Is Robert my father?”
Margaret’s face changed.
“Rachel—”
“Yes or no.”
“He raised you.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Margaret finally whispered:
“No.”
Rachel flinched like she had been struck.
Margaret reached for her.
Rachel stepped back.
“You built my entire life on a lie.”
“I protected you.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I did!”
“You chained Sophie.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“That child destroyed everything.”
Emily stepped between them.
“No. She exposed it.”
Margaret snapped.
“You think you’re better than me? You brought Daniel into this family and let him convince your father to change everything.”
“Dad knew about Sophie?”
Margaret stopped.
Emily caught it.
“Dad knew?”
Margaret turned away.
Rachel whispered:
“Mom.”
Margaret finally broke.
Robert had discovered Sophie two years before his death.
Daniel had shown him DNA evidence.
Robert planned to restore Sophie’s legal identity.
He also planned to remove Margaret from control of Parker Family Holdings.
Emily stared.
“Then why didn’t he?”
Margaret’s eyes flicked toward the floor.
“He died.”
Robert had died after falling down the basement stairs.
The family had always called it an accident.
Emily suddenly felt cold.
Rachel saw her expression.
“No.”
Margaret looked up sharply.
Emily said nothing.
She didn’t accuse.
