Chapter 11 - Margaret Lost Control
Detectives took Margaret’s statement.
She insisted Robert’s fall was accidental.
The reopened investigation did not produce evidence sufficient to prove she intentionally caused his fall.
But investigators did establish something else.
Margaret had lied during the original inquiry.
She had destroyed relevant digital evidence afterward.
And she had failed to disclose the argument.
That reopened scrutiny of everything connected to Robert’s estate.
Including Parker Family Holdings.
Margaret panicked.
She called an emergency board meeting.
Emily and Rachel attended with attorneys.
Margaret sat at the head of the table.
“This company does not become collateral damage because Emily has invented a family tragedy.”
Emily said nothing.
Marcus placed the DNA results on the table.
Verified independently.
Daniel Parker: biological father.
Emily Parker: biological mother.
Probability exceeded 99.99 percent.
Board members began whispering.
Margaret stared straight ahead.
Next came Dr. Reed’s sworn statement.
Then Lauren Mills’s payment records.
Then the forged placement agreement.
Then the trust transfer.
Then Robert’s letter.
Margaret finally exploded.
“You think Robert was some saint?”
Rachel stood.
“No one said that.”
“He lied to me!”
Rachel’s voice sharpened.
“You lied to everyone.”
Margaret pointed at her.
“I protected you from spending your life knowing you weren’t one of them!”
Rachel went completely still.
The entire board heard it.
Margaret realized too late what she had said.
Rachel’s face crumpled.
Then hardened.
“You don’t get to use me as your excuse.”
“I did everything for you.”
“No.”
Rachel looked toward Emily.
“You did everything for control.”
The board’s independent members voted to suspend Margaret’s executive authority pending investigation.
Margaret stared around the table.
People who had obeyed her for years would not meet her eyes.
“You can’t do this.”
The chairman answered:
“We just did.”
Margaret looked at Emily.
“You did this.”
Emily shook her head.
“Sophie did nothing to you.”
“She took my company.”
“She’s a child.”
“She changed the succession!”
“She existed.”
That silenced the room.
Emily continued:
“That’s all she did. She existed.”
Margaret’s hands shook.
For years she had framed Sophie as an invader.
A threat.
A mistake.
Now everyone could see the truth.
Sophie had never taken anything.
Margaret had.
As security escorted Margaret from the executive floor, she turned to Emily.
“You think you won?”
Emily remained calm.
“No.”
Margaret smiled bitterly.
“You don’t even know what Lauren did with the original birth certificate.”
Emily froze.
Margaret walked away.
Marcus immediately called the records office.
Sophie’s current birth certificate listed Lauren as mother.
No father.
If an original certificate existed naming Emily and Daniel, it could prove the concealment from the moment of birth.
But Margaret had just revealed something else.
