Chapter 10 - What Happened the Night Robert Fell

Emily refused to accuse Margaret without evidence.
Robert deserved better than that.
So did the truth.
Marcus obtained the original incident report.
Robert had fallen down twelve basement steps at approximately 10:40 p.m.
Margaret said she had been upstairs asleep.
Rachel had been out of state.
Emily had been on a business trip.
No criminal investigation followed.
But something in the report stood out.
Robert’s phone was never recovered.
At the time, everyone assumed it broke or disappeared during emergency cleanup.
Marcus requested old cellular backup data.
Most had expired.
But Robert had used a cloud service.
A technician recovered fragments.
One voice memo survived.
Time stamped forty-two minutes before Robert’s fall.
Robert’s voice:
Margaret knows Daniel found the girl. She’s threatening to destroy Emily if I move forward.
Emily’s hands went cold.
Robert continued:
I’m meeting her tonight. If she refuses to step down, tomorrow I’m calling Sloan.
Rebecca Sloan.
The same attorney who had later handled part of Robert’s estate.
Emily called Rebecca.
“Did Dad contact you before he died?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“He asked for a draft removal resolution. He died before signing it.”
“Did Mom know?”
“I don’t know.”
Then Rebecca remembered something.
Robert had emailed a copy of the draft to himself.
Margaret had access to his email.
Rachel whispered:
“She knew.”
Still not proof of murder.
Then Marcus found an old smart-home service invoice.
The basement had a motion camera at the time.
It had been removed after Robert’s death because Margaret claimed it malfunctioned.
No footage was retained locally.
But the service company still had metadata.
At 10:37 p.m., motion detected two people entering the basement.
At 10:43 p.m., one person exited.
Emily stared at the report.
“Can they identify who?”
“No video. Just device activity.”
Then came the detail that changed everything.
At 10:36 p.m., Margaret’s phone connected to the basement Wi-Fi access point.
At 10:45 p.m., it reconnected upstairs.
Margaret had lied to police.
She wasn’t asleep.
She had been in the basement.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Emily still refused to say murder.
“Maybe she saw him fall.”
“Then why lie?” Rachel asked.
Emily had no answer.
They gave everything to law enforcement.
Not social media.
Not the company board.
Detectives reopened Robert’s death for review.
Margaret learned within hours.
She arrived at Emily’s temporary apartment furious.
“You brought police into this family?”
Emily stood in the doorway.
“You lied about where you were when Dad died.”
“I panicked.”
“Why?”
Margaret’s face twisted.
“Because we were fighting!”
“About Sophie?”
“Yes!”
Rachel stepped into view behind Emily.
Margaret froze.
Rachel asked quietly:
“What happened in the basement?”
Margaret stared at both daughters.
Then her anger disappeared.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
“He grabbed my arm.”
Emily said nothing.
Margaret continued.
“I pulled away.”
Rachel whispered:
“And?”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“He lost his balance.”
Emily felt the air leave the room.
“You watched him fall.”
Margaret began crying.
“I didn’t push him.”
“Did you call 911?”
Silence.
That was the answer.

Margaret had waited eleven minutes before making the call.
Eleven minutes while Robert lay at the bottom of the stairs.
