Chapter 1 - The Folder on the Floor

Patricia shoved Madison backward with both hands.

Madison’s shoulder struck the dark wooden bookshelf.

Books tumbled around them.

A framed family photograph hit the hardwood floor and shattered.

“Give me that phone!”

Patricia lunged again.

Madison caught her wrist before the second shove landed.

The movement was fast and controlled.

She rotated Patricia’s arm safely away from her face, stepped through her center of balance, and pinned her against the bookshelf without striking her.

Patricia gasped.

Her elegant cream blouse twisted at the shoulder.

Madison’s breathing was heavy, but her voice remained dangerously calm.

“You forged my voice.”

Robert Hayes rushed forward with his wooden cane.

“Madison, let her go!”

Madison looked at her father.

Even now, he moved toward Patricia first.

Not toward the daughter who had just been attacked.

Her phone remained on speaker.

A fraud specialist’s voice crackled from it.

“We have confirmed the transfer authorization used an artificial voice recording.”

Patricia’s face changed.

A thick manila folder, knocked loose during the struggle, slid from beneath the desk.

It struck the floor and burst open.

Copies of Madison’s military identification scattered across the hardwood.

Her driver’s license.

Her Social Security information.

Handwritten bank numbers.

A page containing security questions only close family members could answer.

Robert stopped.

The color drained from his face.

“Patricia… what did you do?”

Madison released Patricia’s wrist but remained between her and the papers.

Patricia reached down.

Madison planted one combat boot over the folder.

“That money belongs to this family,” Patricia hissed.

Madison slowly turned toward Robert.

He still stood closer to his wife.

His cane trembled in his hand.

Madison lifted the phone.

The fraud specialist was still listening.

Then she stepped close enough that Robert had no choice but to meet her eyes.

“Tell your wife my money is not hers.”

Robert’s shoulders collapsed.

Patricia stared at him, silently ordering him to defend her.

For the first time in twenty years, Robert did not immediately obey.

But Madison could already see the truth in his face.
