The insider was named Thomas Reed.
He worked as a senior account manager at Madison’s bank.
He had known Patricia for more than a decade.
They served together on a charity board.
Thomas handled the first transfer personally.
When the automated system flagged the caller’s device location, he overrode the warning.
The call supposedly came from Madison overseas.
The actual device was in Charlotte.
Thomas marked the discrepancy as military network routing.
The second call failed a voice-authentication test.
He approved it manually.
The third transfer exceeded the normal daily limit.
Thomas divided it into smaller amounts.
Madison asked the fraud specialist why an experienced banker would risk his career.
The answer appeared inside Patricia’s handwritten notes.
THOMAS — 10% AFTER SALE.
Patricia planned to sell the renovated house.
She believed the improvements would raise its value by nearly $300,000.
Thomas would receive a share.
Robert had never heard of that arrangement.
When Madison confronted him with the note, his face changed.
“She told me we were staying here.”
Patricia turned on him.
“We needed options.”
“You were selling my home?”
“Our home.”
“With stolen money.”
Patricia’s control began slipping.
She accused Robert of weakness.
She said his medical bills had ruined them.
She claimed Madison owed them compensation for years of emotional neglect.
Madison listened until Patricia ran out of excuses.
Then the fraud specialist spoke through the phone.
“Colonel Hayes, we have located internal approval codes connected to Mr. Reed.”
Patricia lunged for the device.
Madison blocked her.
Robert stared at the bank details scattered across the floor.
One page listed every transfer.
Beside several amounts, Patricia had written initials.

R.H.
Madison pointed to the final initials.
“R.H. is you.”
Robert shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
Patricia answered too quickly.
“Renovation holdings.”
Madison looked at Robert.
He looked terrified.
The initials matched his name.
A second account had been opened using Robert Hayes as the beneficiary.
Money from Madison’s savings had moved through it.
Whether he knew or not, the paper trail made him appear directly involved.
