Chapter 11 - The Second Life Patricia Planned

The offshore account was connected to a property company in Portugal.

Patricia had placed a deposit on a coastal villa.

The purchase contract listed two future occupants.

Patricia Vale.

Thomas Reed.

Robert stared at the names.

Thomas denied any romantic relationship.

Patricia laughed bitterly.

“You are still lying badly.”

Thomas’s face turned red.

Their messages proved the affair had lasted eighteen months.

They planned to leave after Patricia gained control of Robert’s estate.

Thomas would resign from the bank.

Patricia would sell the Charlotte house.

They would disappear before the fraud investigation reached them.

Madison’s money was not only funding renovations.

It was financing Patricia’s escape.

Robert stood near the shattered picture frame.

His shoulders seemed smaller than before.

“You were leaving me.”

Patricia looked at him without remorse.

“You stopped being a husband years ago.”

“I had a stroke.”

“You became dependent.”

“I trusted you.”

“You needed me.”

The cruelty of the distinction silenced him.

Madison watched her father absorb the betrayal.

Part of her wanted to comfort him.

Another part remembered every time he asked her to apologize to Patricia for “keeping the peace.”

Robert had repeatedly required Madison to absorb Patricia’s cruelty so he would not have to confront it.

Now he was finally experiencing the full cost of that choice.

Thomas sat with an investigator and began cooperating.

He provided passwords, account routes, and messages.

Patricia called him weak.

He answered, “You were going to leave me too.”

A second property contract showed the villa would be held only in Patricia’s name.

Thomas had transferred money but possessed no ownership.

Patricia had planned to betray him after betraying Robert.

The pattern was complete.

She did not build partnerships.

She built ladders.

Then removed them behind her.

Madison retrieved the shattered photograph of Elaine.

She brushed glass from the frame.

Robert watched.

“I should have protected that,” he said.

Madison looked at the photograph.

“You should have protected more than a picture.”

He lowered his eyes.

The investigators escorted Thomas from the office for further questioning.

Patricia remained under supervision while warrants were prepared.

No one was arrested in front of Madison yet.

There was still more evidence to secure.

Then Robert asked the question Madison had avoided.

“How much did she take?”

Madison knew the total.

But the number no longer felt like the worst theft.

May you like

“She took enough to expose what everyone was willing to excuse.”

👉 The stolen money could be recovered, but Madison still had to decide whether her father’s silence had destroyed their relationship beyond repair.
