Chapter 10 - The Doctor Patricia Paid
The physician’s name was Dr. Leonard Voss.
He had evaluated Robert after the stroke.
Robert remembered him as patient and reassuring.
The letter in Thomas’s case described severe cognitive decline.
It claimed Robert could not manage finances.
It recommended activating Patricia’s authority immediately.
The evaluation date was two weeks in the future.
The letter had already been signed.
Madison read it twice.
“A doctor signed an examination that hasn’t happened.”
Patricia looked toward Thomas.
Thomas said, “That was not my arrangement.”
The investigators traced payments from Patricia’s renovation company to a consulting business owned by Voss.
Three transfers.
Each just below mandatory reporting thresholds.
Robert lowered himself into the chair again.
Patricia had created two possible futures.
If he died, she inherited everything.
If he lived but resisted her, she declared him incompetent.
In either case, she controlled the estate.
Madison’s stolen money financed the system designed to remove both father and daughter.
Robert looked at Patricia.
“How long?”
She remained silent.
“How long have you been planning to take control?”
Her expression changed.
The panic disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
“Since I realized neither of you understood what you had.”
Madison felt the answer settle into the room.
Patricia did not believe she was stealing.
She believed competence gave her ownership.
Robert’s illness.
Madison’s deployment.
Elaine’s death.
Every vulnerability became an opportunity.
Patricia continued.
“Robert would have wasted the estate. Madison would have left everything sitting in accounts while strangers benefited from her service.”
“Strangers?” Madison said.
“The Army. Your soldiers. Every cause you donate to.”
“My money.”
“You are part of this family.”
“When it benefits you.”
Patricia’s eyes narrowed.
“You think rank makes you untouchable?”
“No.”
Madison stepped closer.
“It taught me that authority without accountability becomes abuse.”
The investigators secured the medical letter.
Thomas requested an attorney.
Patricia refused to answer more questions.
But Robert was no longer looking at her with love or confusion.
He looked at her as though she were a stranger who had entered his house carrying his wife’s face.
Then Madison’s phone buzzed.
The fraud specialist had found a transfer scheduled for that afternoon.
The destination was an offshore account.
The amount was nearly everything remaining in Madison’s savings.
