Chapter 12 - The Apology Madison Refused to Accept

Robert asked Madison to sit with him after the investigators left the room.

Patricia remained in another part of the house with legal counsel.

The office looked damaged.

Books covered the floor.

The manila folder had been sealed as evidence.

The empty spaces felt more honest than the polished room had ever felt.

Robert lowered himself into the leather chair.

“I failed you.”

Madison remained standing.

“Yes.”

“I believed her.”

“Sometimes.”

He looked up.

“What does that mean?”

“You believed her when believing her was easier.”

The words landed harder than anger.

Robert nodded slowly.

“I was lonely after your mother died.”

“So was I.”

“I was afraid after the stroke.”

“So was I.”

“Patricia took care of me.”

“And you let that care purchase permission to hurt me.”

Robert’s eyes filled.

Madison did not look away.

For years, she had protected him from the emotional consequences of his choices.

She would not do it again.

“I kept asking you to understand her,” he said.

“You asked me to surrender boundaries so your marriage stayed comfortable.”

“I thought families compromised.”

“Compromise is not one person bleeding quietly.”

Robert looked toward the broken photograph.

“What can I do?”

“Tell the truth.”

“I did.”

“Not only to investigators.”

Madison wanted him to correct the lies he had repeated to relatives.

That she was selfish.

Cold.

Too committed to the Army.

Unwilling to support family.

Those stories helped Patricia justify the theft.

Robert had spread some of them himself.

“I want you to tell everyone that I did not abandon you,” Madison said. “I did not authorize the transfers. I did not give Patricia permission to use my identity.”

“I will.”

“And do not make your apology dependent on whether I forgive you.”

His face tightened.

“You might not?”

“I don’t know.”

Robert nodded.

It was the first answer he accepted without trying to negotiate.

Then he reached for his cane.

His hand shook badly.

Madison instinctively stepped forward.

She stopped herself.

Robert noticed.

The pain in his face was real.

So was the history between them.

He steadied himself without her.

“I understand,” he said.

Madison was not sure he did.

But he was beginning to.

Outside the office, an investigator called her name.

They had found another audio file on Thomas’s drive.

It was recorded in Patricia’s real voice.

She was speaking to someone unknown.

Her words were clear:
