Chapter 7 - The Account in Robert’s Name

The beneficiary account had been opened eight months earlier.

The application used Robert’s Social Security number and a digital signature.

Robert insisted he had never seen it.

Madison examined the signature.

It looked authentic.

Unlike hers.

Patricia had not needed to forge Robert’s name.

He had signed a stack of estate documents after his stroke.

One page had been folded beneath another.

His signature transferred limited financial authority to Patricia.

She used it to open the account.

The money entered under his name.

Then Patricia moved most of it into companies she controlled.

If investigators discovered the theft, Robert would appear to be the first recipient.

Patricia could claim she followed his instructions.

Robert lowered himself into the leather chair.

His cane fell against the desk.

“You were going to blame me.”

Patricia’s face hardened.

“No one was supposed to investigate.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I protected us.”

“You protected yourself.”

Madison watched something collapse inside her father.

For years, he had defended Patricia because admitting the truth meant admitting he had chosen badly.

Now self-preservation finally forced him to see her clearly.

Patricia moved toward the folder again.

Madison blocked her.

“What are you looking for?”

“Nothing.”

“The account authorization?”

Patricia’s eyes shifted.

Madison bent without removing her boot from the folder and lifted one page.

It contained Robert’s signed power-of-attorney document.

A handwritten note at the bottom read:

USE IF HE PANICS.

Robert read it.

His face emptied.

Patricia reached for him.

“Robert, listen to me.”

He pulled away.

That small movement was the first time Madison had ever seen him reject Patricia physically.

“You knew I would panic,” he whispered.

“You always panic.”

“You planned for it.”

“I planned for every possibility.”

Madison looked at her.

“So did I.”

She revealed that the fraud specialist had been recording the entire call.

Patricia’s admissions, threats, and claim that the money belonged to the family were preserved.

Patricia’s confidence fractured.

“You had no right.”

Madison raised an eyebrow.

“You cloned my voice to steal my savings, and now you want privacy?”

Patricia looked toward the office door.

Robert noticed.

“Who are you waiting for?”

No one answered.

Then a car door closed outside.

Madison moved toward the window.

Thomas Reed, the banker, was walking toward the house.

He carried a small black case.

👉 Thomas had come to destroy the remaining evidence—but he did not know Madison had already placed the house under surveillance.
