Chapter 8 - The Banker at the Front Door

Madison had contacted Army Criminal Investigation before entering the house.

The stolen funds included military pay and deployment compensation.

That gave investigators immediate jurisdiction to coordinate with local authorities and the bank.

Two agents waited in an unmarked vehicle down the street.

Madison’s phone transmitted audio to them.

Thomas Reed approached the front door.

Patricia’s panic turned into fury.

“You brought police here?”

“I brought witnesses.”

Robert stood slowly.

“What is in Thomas’s case?”

Patricia said nothing.

Thomas entered using a code Patricia had given him.

He walked toward the office without knocking.

That alone revealed familiarity.

When he stepped inside, he froze.

Madison stood in uniform beside the scattered documents.

Robert faced Patricia.

The phone remained on speaker.

Thomas forced a smile.

“I heard there was a misunderstanding.”

Madison looked at the black case.

“Open it.”

“This is private bank material.”

“Then you should not have brought it into my father’s house.”

Patricia stepped toward him.

“Thomas, leave.”

Madison blocked the doorway.

“No one leaves with evidence.”

Thomas gripped the case tighter.

Robert raised his cane and placed it across the doorway.

His hands shook, but he held it there.

Madison looked at him.

For the first time, he was standing on her side of the room.

Thomas tried to push past.

Robert did not move.

“Open the case,” he said.

Thomas laughed nervously.

“Robert, you don’t understand.”

“That sentence has cost me enough.”

Thomas set the case on the desk.

Inside were account forms, a portable drive, and printed transaction logs.

Several pages bore internal bank approval codes.

Another contained voice files labeled with Madison’s initials.

Patricia stepped backward.

Thomas turned on her.

“You said she wouldn’t be home.”

Robert looked at his wife.

“You knew he was coming.”

Patricia whispered, “He was helping fix this.”

Thomas snapped, “You told me we were deleting everything.”

The office went silent.

The two investigators entered moments later.

They did not rush.

They identified themselves and secured the case.

Patricia began speaking over Thomas.

Thomas blamed Patricia.

Robert stared at both of them.

Then one agent lifted the portable drive.

“We found an additional folder.”

The folder contained recordings of more voices.

Madison’s was not the only identity Patricia had cloned.

Robert’s voice was there too.

👉 Patricia had used Robert’s synthetic voice to authorize something far more dangerous than a bank transfer.
