Chapter 10 - The Debt Patricia Had Forgotten

Patricia Mitchell’s elegant life had been built on borrowed money.
Her former husband left her two homes and a generous settlement.
She sold both.
Then she financed a lifestyle she could no longer afford.
Charity boards.
Designer clothing.
Luxury travel.
Private clubs.
She survived by moving debt from one company to another.
Three years earlier, her largest lender prepared to foreclose on her remaining assets.
A private investment firm purchased the debt.
Patricia never learned who owned the firm.
Eleanor did.
Northstar Capital belonged to Carter Hospitality Group.
Eleanor had approved the purchase because Ethan had begun dating Vanessa and she did not want Patricia’s financial collapse to harm them.
She gave Patricia favorable terms.
Reduced interest.
Longer repayment.
No public exposure.
Patricia interpreted mercy as weakness.
Now Eleanor removed a document from her bag.
Patricia recognized the Northstar logo.
Her face changed.
“You.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Your homes, vehicles, and consulting company are secured against loans my firm holds.”
Vanessa stared at her mother.
“You told me the debt was gone.”
“It was managed.”
“It was hidden.”
Patricia turned on Eleanor.
“You bought my life.”
“I prevented your creditors from dismantling it.”
“Why?”
“Because my son loved your daughter.”
The room went quiet.
Eleanor continued.
“I never asked for gratitude. I asked for honesty.”
Patricia’s hands trembled.
“If you call the loans now—”
“I have not decided what I will do.”
“You can’t punish Vanessa for a misunderstanding.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“A hose, stolen money, forged authority, and my father. Which part was the misunderstanding?”
Patricia’s desperation became anger.
“You think Eleanor is protecting you? She wanted Vanessa to fail.”
Eleanor looked at Ethan.
“I wanted to be wrong.”
That was the truth.
Ethan saw it.
Patricia saw that he believed her.
Her control collapsed.
She grabbed Eleanor’s grocery bag.
Eleanor held on.
For one tense second, both women pulled.
The zipper tore open.
The waterproof phone slid onto the carpet.
Its recording light blinked.
Every threat.
Every confession.
Every reference to the transfer, legal documents, Richard, and the hidden plan had been captured.
Vanessa stared at the phone.
“How long has that been recording?”
Eleanor answered quietly.
May you like
“Since before you turned on the hose.”
👉 Vanessa’s cruelty had not merely been witnessed by guests—the entire conspiracy had confessed itself into Eleanor’s hidden phone.
