Chapter 6 - The House in Patricia’s Name

The property sat on twelve acres outside Franklin, Tennessee.
A gated estate.
Six bedrooms.
A pool.
A guesthouse.
The deed named Patricia Mitchell as the sole owner.
Ethan stared at the document on Eleanor’s phone.
“You bought your mother a three-million-dollar house with our engagement fund?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“It was supposed to be temporary.”
“Temporary ownership?”
“Mom couldn’t qualify for financing.”
“So you stole from me.”
“I was going to replace it after the wedding.”
“With what?”
Vanessa looked at Eleanor.
“Your mother’s gift.”
Ethan went still.
Eleanor had promised the couple a private wedding gift after the marriage.
She had never disclosed the amount.
Vanessa assumed it would be large enough to replace the missing funds.
“You expected to use my mother’s money to hide what you took from me.”
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“You have more than enough!”
“That isn’t the point.”
“It is the point! Your family sits on hundreds of millions while my mother has had to fight for everything.”
Patricia said nothing.
Eleanor studied her.
Public records showed that Patricia had received two large divorce settlements and inherited property from her parents.
She had not struggled.
She had spent.
Ethan shook his head.
“You lied to me for months.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I did it for family.”
“Your family.”
“You were supposed to become my family.”
“Then why is my name nowhere on the deed?”
Vanessa had no answer.
Patricia finally spoke.
“Ethan, marriages require generosity.”
“So does honesty.”
The clock reached 5:50.
Eleanor called her chief financial officer.
“Freeze the engagement account.”
Patricia lunged for the phone.
Caleb stepped between them.
She stopped inches from him.
The room went silent.
Eleanor completed the instruction.
The transfer was blocked.
Patricia’s composure cracked.
“You had no authority!”
Eleanor looked at her.
“The account is held through my family trust.”
Ethan turned toward Vanessa.
“Did you know that?”
Vanessa looked away.
She had known enough to believe Eleanor’s gift would rescue them.
Not enough to understand Eleanor could see every transfer.
Patricia’s phone buzzed.
She read the message and lost color.
The Franklin property closing had failed.
The seller had canceled.
The deposit was frozen.
Nearly one million dollars was now trapped in an investigation.
Patricia stared at Eleanor with hatred.
“You planned this.”
“No,” Eleanor said. “You planned it. I noticed.”
Then the mansion’s front doors opened.
A man in a gray suit entered carrying a leather case.

Vanessa whispered, “He wasn’t supposed to come until after Ethan signed.”
👉 The missing money was only one part of the scheme—Vanessa had prepared legal documents that could take control of Ethan’s future inheritance.
