Chapter 8 - The Father Who Came Back
Richard Carter had abandoned Ethan when he was fourteen.
He left Eleanor for a younger woman, sold his share of the family’s first hotel, and disappeared to Florida after gambling away most of the money.
For twenty years, he contacted Ethan only when he needed help.
Ethan stopped answering.
Eleanor never spoke badly about him.
She simply cleaned up the debts he left behind and raised their son.
Now Richard appeared in photographs with Patricia.
They had met at a private restaurant three times.
In one image, Patricia handed him an envelope.
Ethan stared at the screen.
“What does he have to do with this?”
Eleanor’s investigator arrived at the mansion minutes later.
Her name was Dana Cole.
She had traced the anonymous envelope about Vanessa back to a courier paid in cash.
The sender remained unknown.
But Dana had uncovered Richard’s role.
Richard falsely claimed he still held an interest in the original Carter family trust.
Patricia planned to use him to challenge Eleanor’s authority after the wedding.
In return, Richard would receive ten percent of any assets Vanessa gained.
Ethan sat down.
“My father sold his interest before I graduated high school.”
“He knows that,” Eleanor said.
“Then the claim is worthless.”
“Legally, yes. Publicly, it could create months of chaos.”
Patricia folded her arms.
“This is ridiculous.”
Dana placed photographs and bank records on the table.
Patricia’s confidence weakened.
Vanessa turned on her mother.
“You said Richard’s claim was valid.”
“I said it was useful.”
“You told me Ethan’s inheritance could be tied up unless we acted first.”
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“So you knew.”
“I knew there might be a dispute.”
“You planned to take control before anyone could stop you.”
“I planned to protect our marriage.”
“There is no marriage.”
Vanessa’s face went blank.
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Patricia moved toward Ethan.
“You are emotional.”
He stepped back.
“Do not touch me.”
Vanessa began crying again.
This time Ethan did not look at her.
He removed the engagement ring from her hand only after asking.
She refused.
So he said quietly, “Keep it. I don’t want anything connected to today.”
That hurt her more.
Patricia looked around at the guests and staff who had heard everything.
Her social mask finally broke.
“You think your mother is innocent?” she asked Ethan. “Ask her why she really came dressed like that.”
Ethan looked at Eleanor.
Eleanor held his gaze.
Before she could answer, Richard Carter walked through the mansion doors.
He smiled as though he had arrived for dinner.
