Chapter 7 - The Papers Ethan Never Read

The man introduced himself as Grant Mercer, a private estate attorney.
Ethan recognized him.
Vanessa had said Grant was helping organize the prenuptial agreement.
Grant placed the leather case on the table.
“I was told Mr. Carter was ready to execute the family management documents.”
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“What family management documents?”
Grant’s expression changed.
“You have not reviewed them?”
Vanessa rushed forward.
“This isn’t the right time.”
Eleanor stepped between Vanessa and the case.
“It is exactly the right time.”
Grant opened the folder reluctantly.
The documents appointed Vanessa as co-manager of several future trusts after marriage.
They also granted Patricia temporary financial authority if Vanessa became “unavailable.”
Ethan read the first page.
“I never agreed to this.”
Vanessa touched his arm.
“You said you didn’t want to deal with complicated finances.”
“I said I trusted you to coordinate the wedding.”
“You always complain that your mother controls everything.”
“So you planned to replace her with yours?”
Patricia’s face hardened.
“That is insulting.”
Eleanor looked at Grant.
“Who drafted the provisions?”
“Mrs. Mitchell gave me the requested structure.”
“Did you verify Ethan’s consent?”
Grant hesitated.
“Vanessa said they had discussed it.”
Ethan closed the folder.
“They had not.”
Grant gathered the papers.
“I will withdraw.”
Vanessa blocked him.
“You can’t leave.”
“I can, and I should.”
Patricia’s voice turned sharp.
“You have already been paid.”
Grant looked at her.
“From which account?”
No one answered.
Grant glanced at the transaction summary on the table.
His face tightened.
“You paid my retainer from the engagement fund?”
Vanessa looked trapped.
Eleanor asked him to preserve every email and draft.
Grant agreed.
As he left, he quietly told Ethan something else.
Vanessa had requested that the final documents be signed during the engagement celebration, after champagne service.
“She said you preferred not to read legal papers,” Grant explained.
Ethan looked at the half-empty glass on the stone step outside.
He understood.
The party.
The alcohol.
The pressure.
The signatures.
None of it had been accidental.
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“I was protecting us from your mother.”
Ethan’s voice went cold.
“My mother is the only reason you failed.”
Patricia slapped her hand against the table.
“Enough! Eleanor arrived disguised, recorded private conversations, froze funds, and humiliated my daughter.”
Eleanor looked toward the garden.
“Your daughter humiliated herself.”
Then the hidden phone vibrated again.
Her investigator had sent a photograph.

It showed Patricia meeting Ethan’s estranged father two weeks earlier.
👉 Patricia had not designed the scheme alone—someone from Ethan’s own family had been helping her.
